🐾🇺🇸 Educational Wednesday: July 4th & Your Pets 🇺🇸🐾
Fireworks, BBQs, family gatherings, and celebrations can be a lot of fun for us—but they can be terrifying and dangerous for our pets.
A little preparation now can help keep your furry family members safe this Independence Day.
✅ DO:
✔️ Make sure your pets are wearing ID tags and that their microchip information is current.
✔️ Exercise dogs earlier in the day before festivities begin.
✔️ Create a safe, quiet space inside your home where pets can retreat from the noise.
✔️ Close windows, doors, and gates before fireworks start.
✔️ Turn on a TV, radio, or fan to help drown out firework sounds.
✔️ Make sure your pet has access to fresh water at all times.
✔️ Have recent photos of your pets in case they become lost.
✔️ If your pet has severe anxiety around fireworks, contact your veterinarian now. Don't wait until July 4th. Many clinics book up quickly, and some medications need to be started before the holiday to be most effective.
❌ DON'T:
❌ Take pets to fireworks displays.
❌ Leave pets outside during celebrations.
❌ Assume your pet "isn't afraid" of fireworks. Even confident pets can panic unexpectedly.
❌ Feed pets table scraps, especially foods like onions, grapes, chocolate, corn cobs, fatty foods, or alcohol.
❌ Leave glow sticks, fireworks, sparklers, lighter fluid, or charcoal where pets can access them.
❌ Open doors carelessly when guests are coming and going.
🐶 A Few Days Before July 4th:
📌 Check collars and tags.
📌 Verify your pet's microchip information is current.
📌 Test fences and gates for weak spots.
📌 Restock medications.
📌 Make sure carriers and crates are ready if needed.
📌 Have an emergency contact and veterinarian number easily available.
📌 If your pet has a history of noise anxiety, contact your veterinarian now to discuss medication options before the holiday arrives.
Every year, shelters and Animal Control facilities see a significant increase in lost pets after the Fourth of July. Most of these situations can be prevented with a little preparation.
Remember: your pet doesn't understand that fireworks are a celebration. They only know that the world suddenly became loud, bright, and scary.
🐾 Let's make sure the only thing lighting up the night sky is the fireworks—not a missing pet report.
❤️ Wishing everyone a safe, fun, and pet-friendly Independence Day!
