🐾🇺🇸 Educational Wednesday: July 4th & Your Pets 🇺🇸🐾

Fireworks, BBQs, family gatherings, and celebrations can be a lot of fun for us—but they can be terrifying and dangerous for our pets.

A little preparation now can help keep your furry family members safe this Independence Day.

✅ DO:

✔️ Make sure your pets are wearing ID tags and that their microchip information is current.

✔️ Exercise dogs earlier in the day before festivities begin.

✔️ Create a safe, quiet space inside your home where pets can retreat from the noise.

✔️ Close windows, doors, and gates before fireworks start.

✔️ Turn on a TV, radio, or fan to help drown out firework sounds.

✔️ Make sure your pet has access to fresh water at all times.

✔️ Have recent photos of your pets in case they become lost.

✔️ If your pet has severe anxiety around fireworks, contact your veterinarian now. Don't wait until July 4th. Many clinics book up quickly, and some medications need to be started before the holiday to be most effective.

❌ DON'T:

❌ Take pets to fireworks displays.

❌ Leave pets outside during celebrations.

❌ Assume your pet "isn't afraid" of fireworks. Even confident pets can panic unexpectedly.

❌ Feed pets table scraps, especially foods like onions, grapes, chocolate, corn cobs, fatty foods, or alcohol.

❌ Leave glow sticks, fireworks, sparklers, lighter fluid, or charcoal where pets can access them.

❌ Open doors carelessly when guests are coming and going.

🐶 A Few Days Before July 4th:

📌 Check collars and tags.

📌 Verify your pet's microchip information is current.

📌 Test fences and gates for weak spots.

📌 Restock medications.

📌 Make sure carriers and crates are ready if needed.

📌 Have an emergency contact and veterinarian number easily available.

📌 If your pet has a history of noise anxiety, contact your veterinarian now to discuss medication options before the holiday arrives.

Every year, shelters and Animal Control facilities see a significant increase in lost pets after the Fourth of July. Most of these situations can be prevented with a little preparation.

Remember: your pet doesn't understand that fireworks are a celebration. They only know that the world suddenly became loud, bright, and scary.

🐾 Let's make sure the only thing lighting up the night sky is the fireworks—not a missing pet report.

❤️ Wishing everyone a safe, fun, and pet-friendly Independence Day!

🐾 Happy Father's Day from Kanines and Kitties! 🐾

Today, we celebrate all the dads out there—whether your children have two legs or four.

To the fathers who work hard every day to provide for their families, who teach kindness, responsibility, and compassion, thank you.

To the dog dads who wake up early for walks, make room on the couch, share their snacks (even when they shouldn't), and never hesitate to spend their weekends at the vet, training class, or pet store—you are appreciated too.

In rescue, we are blessed to meet so many incredible men who foster, volunteer, transport, donate, adopt, and open their hearts to animals in need. Your compassion helps save lives and shows others what true kindness looks like.

🐾🌪️ Educational Wednesday: Hurricane Season & Your Pets 🌪️🐾

Hurricane season is here, and while we prepare our homes and families, we can't forget about our four-legged family members.

A hurricane can happen quickly, and being prepared ahead of time can make all the difference for your pets.

🐶🐱 Here are some important hurricane preparedness tips for pet owners:

✅ Make sure your pet is microchipped A collar can fall off, but a microchip can help reunite you with your pet if you become separated.

✅ Keep ID tags updated Make sure your current phone number and address are on your pet's tag.

✅ Prepare a Pet Emergency Kit Include: • Food and water for at least 5-7 days • Medications and medical records • Leash, harness, and carrier • Food and water bowls • Waste bags and litter supplies • Favorite toy or blanket for comfort • Recent photos of your pet

✅ Have a safe evacuation plan Not all shelters accept pets. Know ahead of time where you can go if you need to evacuate.

✅ Keep pets indoors during storms Loud winds, rain, thunder, and unfamiliar smells can cause even the most well-behaved pets to panic and run away.

✅ Practice loading carriers and kennels An emergency is not the time to discover your pet refuses to enter a carrier.

✅ Keep vaccination records handy Many emergency shelters, boarding facilities, and hotels require proof of vaccinations.

✅ Never leave pets behind If conditions are unsafe for you, they are unsafe for your pets too.

❤️ Remember, our pets depend on us to keep them safe. A little preparation today can save lives tomorrow.

Stay safe, Coastal Bend! Hurricane season is unpredictable, but being prepared helps protect the entire family—two-legged and four-legged alike.

🌧️ Little Reminder for Rainy Days: Standing Water Isn't Always Safe 🐾

Rain can be a blessing, but the puddles and standing water left behind can pose serious health risks for our pets.

Many dogs love to splash, drink from puddles, or play in flooded areas. Unfortunately, those puddles can be filled with parasites, bacteria, and other harmful organisms.

⚠️ Common Dangers Found in Standing Water:

🦠 Giardia A microscopic parasite that can cause: • Severe diarrhea • Vomiting • Weight loss • Dehydration

🦠 Coccidia Another intestinal parasite that is especially dangerous for puppies, kittens, seniors, and pets with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include: • Diarrhea (sometimes bloody) • Loss of appetite • Weight loss • Lethargy

🦠 Leptospirosis A bacterial infection spread through contaminated water and wildlife urine. It can cause: • Fever • Vomiting • Kidney damage • Liver failure • Can even be transmitted to humans

🦟 Mosquitoes Standing water becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of: • Heartworms in dogs • Irritating bites • Disease transmission

🐾 How to Protect Your Pets:
✅ Provide fresh, clean water at all times.
✅ Avoid letting pets drink from puddles, ditches, or floodwater.
✅ Keep heartworm prevention up to date.
✅ Pick up pet waste to help reduce contamination.
✅ Watch for diarrhea, vomiting, or changes in behavior after outdoor adventures.
✅ Remove standing water around your home whenever possible.

A muddy puddle may look like harmless fun, but it can hide parasites and bacteria that lead to serious illness and expensive vet visits.

🌦️ A little caution after the rain can go a long way in keeping your furry family members healthy and happy.

Hot Pavement = Hot Paws

Summer is officially here, and while many of us are enjoying longer days, vacations, and outdoor activities, our pets are facing a danger that is often overlooked: hot pavement.

Many people assume that if the air temperature feels comfortable, the ground must be too. Unfortunately, that's not the case.

🐾 On an 85°F day, asphalt can easily reach 130°F or higher. 🐾 Paw pads can suffer painful burns in less than a minute. 🐾 By the time your dog starts limping or refusing to walk, the damage may already be done.

Try the 7-Second Test Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds.

✋ If it's too hot for your hand... 🐶 It's too hot for your dog's paws.

Summer Safety Tips ✅ Walk early in the morning or later in the evening. ✅ Choose grassy areas whenever possible. ✅ Bring fresh water on walks. ✅ Watch for signs of overheating: • Excessive panting • Heavy drooling • Weakness or lethargy • Vomiting • Bright red gums

Remember, our pets rely on us to make safe choices for them. A quick walk around the block can become a painful experience when temperatures soar.

From all of us at Kanines and Kitties Rescue, we encourage you to take a few extra moments to check the pavement before heading outside. Those little paws are counting on you. ❤️🐾

Stay safe, stay cool, and enjoy your summer adventures together!

🐾 Welcome to the shelter, Willow! 🐾

Willow has officially made it to the shelter and is already settling into her cozy little bed. At 14 years young, this sweet girl may be a senior, but nobody seems to have told her that. Willow is still enjoying life, taking in her new surroundings, and reminding us that age is just a number.

We want to send a huge thank you to Debbie and our friends at South Texas Animal Rescue for reaching out to us and asking if we could help this precious girl. Rescue is never a one-person job, and we are grateful for the trust and teamwork that make stories like Willow's possible.

A special thank you as well for providing Willow's monthly medication and helping ensure she has everything she needs as she begins this next chapter.

This is what rescue is all about. When rescues work together, lives are saved. Resources are shared. Burdens are lightened. And dogs like Willow get the love, care, and safety they deserve.

Welcome to the Kanines and Kitties family, sweet Willow. We are honored to be part of your journey. ❤️🐾

🐾 Welcome Willow to the Kanines and Kitties Family 🐾

Some dogs arrive in rescue wagging their tails and ready to take on the world.

Others arrive carrying the weight of years of neglect, uncertainty, and hardship.

Sweet Willow is one of those souls.

At approximately 14 years old, Willow should be spending her days curled up on a soft bed, surrounded by love and comfort. Instead, she came to us battling a severe flea infestation, significant hair loss across her back end, and cataracts that have stolen much of her vision.

It's clear that life has not always been kind to Willow.

Despite everything she has been through, Willow remains a gentle and social little lady. She wants to be near people, but her vision loss makes the world a scary and confusing place. Every new sound, every unfamiliar step, can be frightening when you can't clearly see what is around you.

But Willow is safe now.

She will never have to worry about where her next meal comes from. She will never have to suffer through fleas eating away at her comfort. She will never have to face her fears alone.

While we don't know how much time Willow has left, we do know one thing:

The rest of her life will be filled with love.

Willow has become one of our fospice babies, and she will likely spend her remaining days with our Kanines and Kitties family. We will make sure she knows comfort, kindness, gentle hands, warm beds, and full bellies for however long she has left.

Please help us welcome Willow and keep her in your thoughts as she begins this next chapter.

No matter how many days, weeks, months, or years she has left, they will be her best ones yet. ❤️

Welcome home, Willow.

☀️🐾 EDUCATIONAL WEDNESDAY 🐾☀️

School is out. Summer is here.
The kids are excited.
The pools are open.
The vacations are planned.

But while we're making memories this summer, let's not forget about the four-legged family members who are coming along for the ride. ❤️

Summer can be one of the most dangerous times of the year for pets if we're not prepared.

🔥 The Texas Heat Is No Joke
Your dog doesn't care that it's 98° outside. They'll happily chase a ball until they overheat.

Watch for:
🐾 Hot pavement that can burn paws
💧 Dehydration
😮‍💨 Heat exhaustion
☀️ Heatstroke

A good rule? If you can't comfortably hold your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds, it's too hot for your pet's paws.

🚗 The Most Dangerous Summer Mistake
"I'll only be gone a minute."

Please don't.

A parked vehicle can become deadly in minutes, even with windows cracked.

No errand is worth your pet's life.

🏖️ Vacation Time!
Whether you're heading to the beach, visiting family, or taking a road trip, make sure your pet is ready too.

✔️ Current ID tags
✔️ Updated microchip information
✔️ Enough food and medications
✔️ Water for the trip
✔️ A secure leash or carrier

Because pets can get lost in unfamiliar places much faster than they do at home.

🏠 Leaving Your Pet Behind?
Don't wait until the night before your trip.

Make arrangements with a trusted pet sitter, family member, or boarding facility well in advance.

Leave emergency contacts, feeding instructions, medications, and your veterinarian's information.

🎆 Summer Means More Than Sunshine
It also means storms, fireworks, mosquitoes, and more opportunities for pets to become frightened and run away.

Make sure fences are secure.
Keep identification current.
And always have a plan.

❤️ At Kanines and Kitties, we've seen far too many pets come through our doors every summer because of preventable accidents.

The good news?

Most of them can be avoided with a little planning.

Let's make this a summer filled with road trips, pool days, belly rubs, family photos, and happy memories—not emergency vet visits.

Because our pets don't get a summer break from depending on us.

🐾 Stay safe.
🐾 Stay cool.
🐾 Make memories.

And give your pets an extra treat from all of us at Kanines and Kitties. ❤️Picture headline idea: ☀️ SUMMER BREAK IS HERE! ☀️
"Your pets are counting on you this summer."

🌧️ Educational Wednesday: Storms, Pet Safety & The Aftermath
From Kanines and Kitties 🐾

Storm season can be scary for us — but for our pets, it can be terrifying.

Before storms arrive, bring pets inside, secure gates, check fences, and make sure collars and microchips are up to date. Loud thunder, flooding, wind, and flying debris can cause even the most loyal dog to panic and run.

After the storm, the danger is not always over.

Standing water can hide sharp objects, chemicals, snakes, and bacteria. Broken fences can lead to escaped pets. Downed limbs and debris can injure paws. And after heavy rain, mosquitoes explode — which means a higher risk of heartworms.

❤️ Please remember:
Microchip your pets.
Keep them on heartworm prevention.
Do not leave them outside during severe weather.
Check your yard before letting them out.
Dump standing water when it is safe.

Storms pass, but our responsibility doesn’t.
Keep them safe before, during, and after. 🐾💛

05/25/2026

🐾 What a great day! 🐾

Today was one of those simple, beautiful rescue days that fills your heart completely. ☀️💛

Thor, Emma, Alice, Pumpkin, and Zoe got some extra outside time today… and they made every second count.

Sniffing every corner.
Rolling in the grass.
Playing together.
Giving sweet kisses.
Soaking up the sunshine, freedom, and love they deserve so much.

Moments like this may seem small to some people…
But to a rescuer, this is everything.

Watching dogs feel safe.
Watching tails wag without fear.
Watching them simply get to be dogs.

That is what makes a rescuer’s heart happy. ❤️🐾
