Texas is a big state, and Outside Construction Jurisdictions can be confusing if you don’t already know where to look.

There has been a lot of activity across Texas lately, and it’s important for members, travelers, and future members to understand which IBEW Local has outside jurisdiction in the area where they live and work.

Texas has 9 IBEW Locals with outside construction jurisdiction:

Local 66
Local 220
Local 278
Local 301
Local 583
Local 602
Local 681
Local 738
Local 2286

When someone is looking to become a member of the IBEW, we generally prefer they make membership in the jurisdiction where they live. That helps build stronger Locals, stronger relationships, and a stronger Union presence in that community.

There are times when it may make sense to make membership where you are working, especially depending on the job, the contractor, or the situation. But in the long run, we want members tied to the Local that represents the area they call home.

Know your jurisdiction. Know your Local. Build strength where you live.

Data centers mean high wages for IBEW members, career opportunities, and economic growth, but only when built with strong labor standards.

Tell Congress to reject data center bans and support worker-first policies like PLAs, apprenticeships, and responsible contractors. Write to your members of Congress today. https://bit.ly/4skuOvC

Attention Texas electricians and apprentices:

TDLR has announced proposed rule changes for Chapter 73, Electricians, with official publication in the Texas Register scheduled for April 10, 2026. Public comments will be accepted through May 11, 2026.

The proposal is expected to address a new journeyman electrician education-program pathway along with related examination and training provisions.

IBEW 278 encourages all members of the trade to review the published proposal carefully once it is released and consider submitting comments.

If you care about licensing standards, training quality, supervision, safety, and the future of the electrical trade in Texas, pay attention to this process.

More information will be shared after publication.
