Kara Regan, Founder and President of Amazingly Complicated Prison Outreach (ACPO)

Kara Regan is a passionate social justice fighter who has been working to level prisoner disparities for years. She has three degrees in Administration of Justice, Psychology and Social Sciences and is currently working on two BA degrees at the University of California, Irvine in Psychological Sciences and Criminology, Law and Society.

Kara founded her own prison outreach nonprofit organization called Amazingly Complicated Prison Outreach (ACPO) acpoutreach.org . Rehabilitation is the solution and excessive punishment is not. America needs new reformed laws, end mass incarceration, and see the people who are in prison as a human and not just a number.

Everyone has a story to tell.. and everyone has that choice to commit a rational act. But it is unfortunate that others do commit that choice. We should not judge from their past mistakes, but acknowledge the actions that they are trying to make to better themselves to society. How are we helping society as a whole by not giving felons second chances? Healing helps with forgiving.

"Why help inmates, are they not criminals?" People might wonder and be shocked about helping inmates that are inside and why people want to help them. The simple answer is that our government has failed them. As early as 7years old. This inmate has been incarcerated off and on as early as 13 years old. Punishment does not work, but rehabilitation does. That is when Amazingly Complicated Outreach Prison comes in to help these inmates.

Mission Statement

The mission of Amazingly Complicated Prison Outreach organization is to offer a selection of tools that prisoners can use in the aim of self-betterment. Our organization was designed with four specific aims: 1. Education. Through a carefully selected educational tutoring plan designed around developing a growth mindset, prisoners will have the opportunity to receive academic attention needed to succeed. 2. Creative outlet. We promote a voice and platform for prisoners through a published newsletter written “by the prisoners, for the prisoners” where inmates utilize their amazing creativity. An outlet for poetry, art and opinions. 3. Personal reinforcement. With visitation, members of our team give prisoners the face to face positive attention that is so desperately needed in the process of inward growth and mentorship. 4. Societal positivity. Although our mission is to reach into every single prison, the benefits of this organization do not stop behind bars. Every person working to uplift the purpose of this outreach, benefit extraordinarily. 5. Research. Research will be conducted with the purpose of understanding the prisoner condition in order to make appropriate decisions to benefit. With a passionate team and access to unlimited possibility, our mission is not merely a vision, but a reality that educates, empowers, motivates and implements because we believe that, in order for a prisoner to succeed positively, they must have the tools to do so. We aim to provide those tools.
