Our Cultivating Justice and Growing Together event, held last weekend at our Amandla Center in Riverhead, was a resounding success!

We welcomed so many friends, allies, volunteers, Board members, and clergy — including the Rt. Rev. Adam Shoemaker, the new Bishop of Long Island. And, we are proud to say that our program participants from CASA, the Committee for Equitable and Inclusive Education, Mujeres de Esperanza, and VOLIY turned out in full force!

It was a wonderful opportunity for folks to hear from our grassroots leaders about the critically important work they’ve been doing in our community, and to hear their personal stories during this time of political injustice.

We also had a beautiful selection of plants for purchase by the Long Island Farmworker Cooperative, and the food? To die for, prepared by our program participants under the watchful eye of Long Island Regional Coordinator Noemi Sanchez.

Our Benefit Concert, hosted by St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Bedford, is happening October 16 at 7 pm!

The event will feature pianist Cynthia Peterson, soprano Sasha Gutiérrez, and harpist Liann Cline, along with David Fiedler (violin), Dave Restivo (violin), Sarah Adams (viola), and Seth Jacobs (cello).

The evening will also feature a presentation by members of our Youth Arts Group (YAG). All proceeds will support Rural & Migrant Ministry and our programs.

RMM is pleased to share a recent win for farmworkers in New York:

A Magistrate Judge in the Western District of New York recently upheld farmworkers’ union rights.

The original lawsuit, brought by the New York State Vegetable Growers Association and three other individual farms, was an attempt to block workers from unionizing under the 2019 NY Farm Laborers Fair Labor Practices Act — a law that righted a 400-year injustice. RMM is proud to have campaigned for the law's passage for more than 20 years.

While farmworkers still face union-busting tactics by farm owners, the judge’s decision to block the preliminary injunction brought by the growers has affirmed their right to a union for the time being.
