Philippians 2:1-2 - Christian Truth Provokes Christian Unity

Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.

Paul here uses the term "if", but it is better understood as "since". SINCE there is encouragement in Christ, since there is consolation of love, since there is fellowship of the Spirit, since there is affection and compassion. In other words, since Christ and His Spirit provide encouragement, consolation, fellowship, affection and compassion...

As a result, Christian people are to be united -> same mind, love, spirit and purpose.

Such as response by the Philippians would make Paul's joy complete.

Since Christianity is true, then Christians should be united. Since Christians should be united, then we should be joyous about it.

PSA: God created and designed you for His purposes. Fulfillment literally comes from fulfilling the purposes for which He made you.

It is logically impossible to create or design yourself. Therefore, pursuing your own purposes is irrational.

PSA: Worship God, not yourself/your feelings.

On this distinction, pretty much all of our societal divisions and ills rest.

Philippians 1:27-30 - How to Live

Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; in no way alarmed by your opponents—which is a sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God. For to you it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, experiencing the same conflict which you saw in me, and now hear to be in me.

Paul urges the believers at Philippi to do the following:

1. Conduct themselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ - the gospel as immense value and those who receive it have a remarkably high calling, which is to show itself in how they live

2. Paul wants them to have unity in their faith no matter what

3. Paul points out that their behavior and the behavior of their opponents reveal the truth about them and their respective destinies

4. Paul wants them to be willing to follow Jesus, even if they suffer, to the degree that they likewise recognize "to live is Christ, and to die is gain"

Philippians 1:21-24 - Personal Benefit vs Serving Others

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose. But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better; yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake.

While death is always a tragedy, Paul recognizes that, for the Christian, it is better to be with Jesus in heaven that on earth. However, his devotion to minister to others, such as the people at the church in Philippi, is also a strong passion.

Christian - may we love and minister to people, but keep Jesus as our first love knowing that heaven is our home.
