Frequently located in lower-income neighborhoods and communities, soup kitchens are often staffed by volunteer organizations, such as church or community groups. Soup kitchens often obtain food from local food banks for free or at a deep discount. Soup kitchens are considered a charity, which makes it considerably easier for the soup kitchen to feed a large number of people… it is believed the term “breadline” was coined in the 1880’s when a noteworthy bakery in New York City’s Greenwich Village, “Fleischmann Model Viennese Bakery”, instituted a policy of distributing unsold baked goods to the poor at the end of the business day… The concept of soup kitchens hit the mainstream of the United States during the Great Depression... Once again, we find ourselves in a depressed economic environment when soup kitchens are desperately needed...
