It is with heavy hearts that we extend our thoughts and prayers to the Churchill family during this difficult time following the passing of Mr. Monroe Churchill.

Mr. Churchill dedicated his life to the fire service and his community, serving 18 years as Fire Chief of the Ecru Fire Department in Pontotoc County and 16 years as Assistant Chief. His leadership, service, and commitment to protecting others left a lasting impact on countless lives and will not be forgotten.

We lift up his son, FF Fred Churchill, who continues that legacy of service as a member of the Wenasoga Fire Department and Glen Fire Department here in Alcorn County.

Please keep the Churchill family, friends, and fellow firefighters in your prayers in the days ahead.

🚩 Red Flag Burn Warning 🚩

Alcorn County is currently under a Red Flag Burn Warning per National Weather Service, meaning conditions are extremely favorable for fires to start and spread rapidly.

🔥 What this means:
• Strong winds, low humidity, and dry conditions are present
• Fires can quickly get out of control—even from small sparks

⚠️ We strongly urge all residents to AVOID burning if at all possible.
If you must burn, use extreme caution and take every safety precaution necessary.

Please help us keep our community, homes, and first responders safe. A single fire can escalate quickly under these conditions.

Stay alert. Stay safe.

🚨 Burn Ban Update 🚨

The countywide burn ban will officially expire tonight at midnight.

While conditions have improved, we strongly urge all residents to continue using extreme caution when conducting any outdoor burning. Dry conditions and changing winds can still create dangerous situations very quickly.

Please remember:
🔥 Never leave a fire unattended
🔥 Keep a water source nearby
🔥 Avoid burning on windy days
🔥 Make sure all fires are completely extinguished

Our goal is to keep everyone safe and prevent unnecessary fire responses. We appreciate your continued cooperation and commitment to protecting our community.

This morning at approximately 6:03 AM, Rienzi, Biggersville, and Southwest Fire Departments, along with the Alcorn County Special Operations Unit, responded to a reported structure fire in downtown Rienzi.

Upon arrival, crews encountered flames on one end of the structure. Firefighters quickly initiated an interior attack and were able to bring the fire under control.

All occupants had safely exited the structure prior to emergency personnel arriving, and no injuries were reported.

We are grateful for the swift, coordinated response from all agencies involved.

3.31.26 CARROLL COUNTY WILDFIRE UPDATE:
Some good news this morning from Michael Crabb at the Mississippi Forestry Commission.

The Big Hungry Fire in Carroll County is now 90% contained, marking significant progress after days of intense firefighting efforts.

All air support operations have officially ended, and crews have transitioned into the next phase of response. The Mississippi Forestry Commission will continue to monitor the area and conduct mop-up operations, working to eliminate remaining hotspots and prevent flare-ups.

This wildfire has burned 4,246 acres, making it the second-largest wildfire on record in Mississippi. The only larger fire remains last year’s Shoot House Fire in Perry County, which burned over 6,000 acres.

While containment is high, this fire is not fully out yet. Crews will remain on scene until conditions are completely secure.

We continue to thank all firefighters, first responders, and supporting agencies for their relentless work protecting lives and property.
