The Eyak Preservation Council (EPC) is a Native-founded, Native-led, grassroots organization. EPC is dedicated to protecting wild salmon habitat, preserving Indigenous cultures, and promoting sustainable communities in Prince William Sound, the Copper River Delta and the Gulf of Alaska.
EPC was conceived on the day of the Exxon Valdez oil spill: March 23rd, 1989. The disastrous pollution from the event turned EPC’s founder, Dune Lankard, from a commercial fisherman into a life-long community activist.
EPC was formed with the initial intention of preserving forest habitats threatened in the wake of the spill. Profiteers saw that all eyes were on the marine environment, and thought that would be a strategic time to start clear-cutting hundreds of thousands of acres of temperate rainforest…
In 1995, EPC successfully protected 765,000 acres of ancestral rainforests from the clear-cutting efforts of regional Native Corporations in the spill zone, turning the Exxon disaster into an opportunity to set new precedents for conservation.
