On September 29, our foundations namesake would’ve been 93 years old. On behalf of my board of directors, friends and family, we wish mom a happy birthday and in honor of her birthday. I would ask that everyone who sees this go to www.hessstrokefoundation.org and donate $93 in Mary’s name. Thank you so much in advance for your generosity and your caring.

The Mary M. Hess Foundation: A History of Compassion and Advocacy

Origins: A Family’s Personal Journey

The Mary M. Hess Foundation was established following a deeply personal and painful experience. In January 2014, Mary Hess — a resilient, healthy breast cancer survivor — suffered a severe stroke that left her right-side hemiplegic, non-verbal, and completely dependent on others for care. Despite receiving three disciplines of therapy through Medicare Part A’s limited 100-day benefit, her progress was abruptly interrupted by insurance limitations and the inability of long-term care facilities to meet her extensive needs .

Mission & Purpose: Filling a Critical Gap

Motivated by her mother’s experience, the foundation’s founders—Mary’s children—launched the Mary M. Hess Foundation for Acute Stroke Care and Rehabilitation. Its mission is crystal clear: to identify stroke survivors whose rehab needs exceed Medicare’s 100-day benefit and to fund ongoing therapy until they reach their maximum potential, as determined by neurologists and care teams .

The foundation’s purpose is rooted in a commitment to improving quality of life for seniors and stroke survivors, particularly those in nursing homes who fall through gaps in Medicare coverage. The goal is to ensure their therapy continues when traditional funding ends .

Mary’s Story: The Heart Behind the Foundation

The foundation’s creation is deeply entwined with Mary’s own journey. After her stroke in 2014, despite some initial gains, therapy was abruptly halted when Medicare coverage ended. Even persistent advocacy didn’t sustain the therapy that was restoring some function. Mary passed away on June 29, 2015, without fully accessing the therapeutic support she had begun to respond to. Her death, at age 82, underscored the systemic shortcomings in long-term rehabilitation care and galvanized her family to act .

Impact and Vision

In Mary’s honor, the foundation serves as a lifeline to stroke survivors stranded by insurance limitations. It offers tangible financial support to continue therapy beyond Medicare’s cap, aiming to maximize recovery and dignity in their later years. Moreover, the foundation’s founders advocate for legislative improvements to enhance care standards for seniors and stroke patients—pursuing broader, systemic change alongside direct assistance .

Why It Matters
• Personal Legacy: Born from a family’s love and loss, the foundation embodies Mary Hess’s strength and story.
• Real-World Impact: It addresses a critical and often overlooked gap in post-stroke care.
• Advocacy & Awareness: Beyond grants, the foundation engages in policy efforts to improve care access for seniors.

Looking Ahead

Though information about the foundation’s current programs or scale isn’t widely published online, this narrative offers a powerful foundation story—one that couples compassion with advocacy to meet an urgent medical and social need.
