TROOP 270 HELPS PLACE FLAGS ON ANDERSONVILLE GRAVES

Lest we forget!

Andersonville National Cemetery held its annual Memorial Day service and flag placement on Saturday, May 23. Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 joined over 200 other volunteers to place American flags on the graves of more than 22,000 veterans.

The process took less than two hours and was followed by a hotdog lunch in the picnic area between the cemetery, the Civil War prison site, and the National Prisoner of War Museum.

Following lunch, the Scouts toured the museum and prison site, before returning home.

Eight Scouts from Troop 270 participated, including Jake Atkins, Landon Atkins, Simon Baker, William Bridges, Zayden Faircloth, Tristan Hayes, Andrew Lamphier, and Mason Phillips. They were joined by adult Scouters Brady Atkins, Gene Baker, Inga Bridges, Britt Brinson, Mary Phillips, and David Wade.

The Crisp County contingent was rounded out by Scout Moms Stefani Atkins and Nicole Baker, Scout sibling Doni Rae Baker, Pack 270 Cub Scout Zylus Sinnot and Cubmaster Abrianna Mitchell.

TROOP 270 HOLDS "SEND MY BUTT TO CAMP" BOSTON BUTT COOKIN'

Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 would like to thank everyone who supported our 13th annual "Send My Butt To Camp" Boston Butt Sale. The Troop sold 336 pieces of meat, its second most all time.

The guys made a great effort over a three week period selling tickets, but the real work happened May 21-22. Five cookers were used, beginning Thursday evening with around 200 Butts getting rubbed and placed on the cookers by 8 pm. Over the next four hours, the meat was sprayed a couple of times with orange juice. At that point, the Butts were removed from the racks, wrapped in aluminum foil, and placed back on the cookers.

The pork shoulders were checked throughout the night with about 100 coming off the cookers around 3 am. Butts were consolidated and the Troop's big cooker was reloaded with the second batch of Butts....and the process started all over again.

Troop 270 has had its own cooker for a couple of years now, made from a 1000 gallon propane cylinder, but to cook the number of Butts we tend to cook at each event, we need help. The Troop would also like to thank everyone who loaned us cookers. Our benefactors this year were Kenny Calhoun, Roger Elliott, Tommy Stewart, and Bobby Wade.

The Troop plans to do this again with ticket sales for the "It's Thanksgiving....Butt" Boston Butt Sale starting in October. The Butts will be ready for pick up the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

We know how much effort Scouters put into helping Scouts achieve their goals. This new study, published by Scouting America, helps to see the incredible impact that earning Eagle can have on the lives of Scouts. The study looks at 1) Well-Being & Outlook on Life, 2) Health & Activities, 3) Leadership & Civic Engagement, and 4) Character & Values.
