The American flag was first flown on September 3, 1777, during the Revolutionary War. Adopted just three months earlier with 13 stripes and 13 stars, it had already become a symbol of a new nation.
From that very first unfurling of the Stars and Stripes, our flag has stood as a symbol of freedom, unity, and the sacrifices made to secure them.
