We'd like you to meet Scott Carter — a Volunteer Land Steward who has been showing up for Hollow Oak Land Trust for a decade.
Scott started volunteering because Hollow Oak's conservation areas are close to his home, and he saw firsthand how much well-maintained, accessible trails matter in suburban communities. Ten years later, he's still out there.
His favorite memory? The completion of the Thorn Hollow trail system. "Building the trail from the beginning to seeing the completion of the project was a sense of accomplishment as a land steward." That kind of long-view dedication — seeing a project through from first shovel to finished trail — is what makes our Volunteer Land Steward program so special.
Scott sees our green spaces as an extension of his own neighborhood, and he hopes others will too. "Living near a trail head allows me to go out and explore our green spaces. It helps the community connect to them and explore them for the first time."
For anyone on the fence about volunteering, Scott puts it simply: "You will find a welcoming group of individuals ready to help you develop the skills needed to build trails and protect our green spaces."
And on why financial support matters? "The financial support of Hollow Oak will allow volunteers to continue to protect the ever-decreasing amount of available green space in the airport corridor for future generations."
That's the heart of it. People like Scott give their time — your membership gives them what they need to keep going. Tools, training, resources, and the knowledge that this community has their back.
