We'd like you to meet Scott Carter — a Volunteer Land Steward who has been showing up for Hollow Oak Land Trust for a decade.

Scott started volunteering because Hollow Oak's conservation areas are close to his home, and he saw firsthand how much well-maintained, accessible trails matter in suburban communities. Ten years later, he's still out there.

His favorite memory? The completion of the Thorn Hollow trail system. "Building the trail from the beginning to seeing the completion of the project was a sense of accomplishment as a land steward." That kind of long-view dedication — seeing a project through from first shovel to finished trail — is what makes our Volunteer Land Steward program so special.

Scott sees our green spaces as an extension of his own neighborhood, and he hopes others will too. "Living near a trail head allows me to go out and explore our green spaces. It helps the community connect to them and explore them for the first time."

For anyone on the fence about volunteering, Scott puts it simply: "You will find a welcoming group of individuals ready to help you develop the skills needed to build trails and protect our green spaces."

And on why financial support matters? "The financial support of Hollow Oak will allow volunteers to continue to protect the ever-decreasing amount of available green space in the airport corridor for future generations."

That's the heart of it. People like Scott give their time — your membership gives them what they need to keep going. Tools, training, resources, and the knowledge that this community has their back.

Memberships start at just $35. Join or renew today at the link below and put your support directly into the ground. 🌳 https://hollowoak.org/ways-to-give/membership-donations/

Meet Joe Dawley 🌿Joe started volunteering with Hollow Oak the way a lot of parents do — his son needed school credit. But something happened out on the trail that made him stick around.
Now Joe leads a volunteer work day at our Vinegar Hollow property every other week, 5:30–7:30pm, clearing overgrown trees and brush and keeping the trails open for everyone who walks them.
He'll tell you himself: when you volunteer with Hollow Oak, you can see the difference you made. That's rare. And it matters.
Greenspace doesn't protect itself. It takes neighbors like Joe showing up — biweekly, after work, sleeves rolled up — to make sure it's still here.

🌿 Leaves of three? Look before you touch — but knowing which plant you’re looking at makes all the difference.

Poison ivy and poison oak are easy to confuse, and so are some look-alikes that are totally harmless. Here’s a quick field guide:

Poison Ivy — Found throughout Pennsylvania. Always three leaflets, pointed tips, slightly glossy. Grows as a vine, shrub, or ground cover. Middle leaflet has a longer stem than the two side ones.

Poison Oak — Less common in our region, but similar shape. Leaflets have rounded, lobed edges — more like an oak leaf. Also grows in clusters of three.

Box Elder (harmless!) — Young box elder saplings have three leaflets and fool a lot of people. Key difference: box elder grows opposite each other on the stem; poison ivy leaflets are more staggered.

Raspberry/Blackberry (harmless!) — Three leaflets, but the stems have visible thorns. Poison ivy has smooth stems.

The golden rule: leaves of three, let it be — but also watch for the shiny surface, the asymmetry between leaflets, and where you’re walking. Trails edges and disturbed ground are prime spots.
