The tournament will be held on July 29-30th, 2023, at Creekside Ballpark in Coralville, Iowa. The tournament came about through discussions among the Liquor Downtown (LD) softball team (now known as Ghost Runnerz). Some members wanted to play in a weekend softball tournament. Since there were not many available in the Iowa City/Coralville area, the team decided to host one. During the course of th
ese discussions, using the tournament as a fundraiser for a non-profit organization was discussed. The Iowa City Chapter of the MISS Foundation was selected as the initial beneficiary in 2012, and the tournament continues to raise money for children's charities to this day. The charity we have chosen for 2023 is The Big O Foundation, a North Liberty based organization working to help children, teenagers, and their families facing mental health challenges, as well as raising su***de awareness. The previous beneficiaries of the tournament's proceeds include the following organizations:
*The Iowa City Chapter of the MISS Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing support and education to communities, families, and individuals who have experienced the death of an infant or child of any age.
*UI Children's Hospital, which cares for newborn infants born prematurely, or born with low birth weight, birth defects, heart trouble, lung problems, or other life-threatening conditions.
*Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating, finding, and supporting programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children.
*Special Olympics Iowa, a statewide movement that unleashes the human spirit through the transformative power and joy of sports. Using sports as the catalyst, and including programming on health and education, Special Olympics is fighting inactivity, injustice and intolerance.
*Midwest Military Outreach (MMO) connects service members, veterans and their families to the resources they need. MMO provides support in the critical life areas of family, employment, education, financial education and health. We decided to designate our donation to be used for children's programs by MMO.
*TaterTough, the Schaefer family of Williamsburg, whose son, Tate, battled brain cancer and DIPG.
*Families Helping Families, a Cedar Rapids based organization with the mission to meet the needs of youth who have been abused or neglected to allow them to have the same chance as their peers to be healthy and productive citizens by offering various programs to these deserving children.
*Loving Tanner, a non-profit organization that exists to support and advocate for families suffering pregnancy and infant loss. They offer care boxes, peer support, certificates of life, and other remembrance items for these families at no cost. The tournament is named using the initials JTC, which stand for Jesse Tyler Correll, who was lost in the 33rd week of pregnancy to an umbilical cord accident. It is in his memory that we are hosting the tournament and making the donation to Loving Tanner. At the moment, we are looking for 24 teams to play in this tournament. Saturday will feature round robin play, with each team being guaranteed 3-4 games. Sunday will feature a single elimination tournament, with a consolation bracket to guarantee two games per team on Sunday. The cost for each team to register will be $200. This fee will help fund the tournament and make a contribution to The Big O Foundation. Admission will be charged to the tournament on the Saturday of the event, and all proceeds from admissions will go to The Big O Foundation. There will also be a raffle held, with prizes from local businesses. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit The Big O Foundation.
