The JTC Softball Tournament

The JTC Softball Tournament The JTC Men’s Rec D and Co-Ed Softball Tournament The JTC Memorial Tournament is a slow-pitch softball tournament for Men's (Rec/D League) and Co-Ed teams.

The tournament will be held on July 29-30th, 2023, at Creekside Ballpark in Coralville, Iowa. The tournament came about through discussions among the Liquor Downtown (LD) softball team (now known as Ghost Runnerz). Some members wanted to play in a weekend softball tournament. Since there were not many available in the Iowa City/Coralville area, the team decided to host one. During the course of th

ese discussions, using the tournament as a fundraiser for a non-profit organization was discussed. The Iowa City Chapter of the MISS Foundation was selected as the initial beneficiary in 2012, and the tournament continues to raise money for children's charities to this day. The charity we have chosen for 2023 is The Big O Foundation, a North Liberty based organization working to help children, teenagers, and their families facing mental health challenges, as well as raising su***de awareness. The previous beneficiaries of the tournament's proceeds include the following organizations:

*The Iowa City Chapter of the MISS Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing support and education to communities, families, and individuals who have experienced the death of an infant or child of any age.

*UI Children's Hospital, which cares for newborn infants born prematurely, or born with low birth weight, birth defects, heart trouble, lung problems, or other life-threatening conditions.

*Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating, finding, and supporting programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children.

*Special Olympics Iowa, a statewide movement that unleashes the human spirit through the transformative power and joy of sports. Using sports as the catalyst, and including programming on health and education, Special Olympics is fighting inactivity, injustice and intolerance.

*Midwest Military Outreach (MMO) connects service members, veterans and their families to the resources they need. MMO provides support in the critical life areas of family, employment, education, financial education and health. We decided to designate our donation to be used for children's programs by MMO.

*TaterTough, the Schaefer family of Williamsburg, whose son, Tate, battled brain cancer and DIPG.

*Families Helping Families, a Cedar Rapids based organization with the mission to meet the needs of youth who have been abused or neglected to allow them to have the same chance as their peers to be healthy and productive citizens by offering various programs to these deserving children.

*Loving Tanner, a non-profit organization that exists to support and advocate for families suffering pregnancy and infant loss. They offer care boxes, peer support, certificates of life, and other remembrance items for these families at no cost. The tournament is named using the initials JTC, which stand for Jesse Tyler Correll, who was lost in the 33rd week of pregnancy to an umbilical cord accident. It is in his memory that we are hosting the tournament and making the donation to Loving Tanner. At the moment, we are looking for 24 teams to play in this tournament. Saturday will feature round robin play, with each team being guaranteed 3-4 games. Sunday will feature a single elimination tournament, with a consolation bracket to guarantee two games per team on Sunday. The cost for each team to register will be $200. This fee will help fund the tournament and make a contribution to The Big O Foundation. Admission will be charged to the tournament on the Saturday of the event, and all proceeds from admissions will go to The Big O Foundation. There will also be a raffle held, with prizes from local businesses. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit The Big O Foundation. Hey, everyone! In the words of Staind, it's been awhile!

JP was contacted by the City of Coralville to ask if we would be willing to forward this information out to all of our previous participating teams. Coralville is hosting a Men's and Co-Ed softball tournament this August 2nd and 3rd. The information we have is listed below. If any of you are in the market for some more softball this summer, you should definitely check this out, as Coralville was very good to us throughout our run with the JTC Tournament.

If you have any questions about this tournament, please contact Coralville Parks & Rec or use the contact info listed below. We are not putting on this tournament; we are just getting the information out there.

Thanks, everyone!

We have given our donations out from this year's JTC Tournament. The Big O Foundation received $5000, and the Iowa City MISS Chapter received $2750. Thanks to Joe and Jennifer Skelley for coming out to the ballpark to receive their donation, and for Jennifer Maser for accepting the MISS Foundation's donation.

Overall, the $7750 from this year's tournament brings the grand total for the 12 years of the JTC Tourney to $69,963 raised.

Let that sink in, everyone...

$70K for children's charities. From playing softball with a bunch of amazing supporters!

Once again, from all of us, thank you all for making this tournament make such a difference!

And now for something more personal, from the guy behind the keyboard here in the JTC Social Media Center.

It's tough for me to put into words exactly what the last 12 years of this tournament have meant to me (but if you know me, I'm going to try anyway). This hasn't been just a way of raising money for deserving children's charities for me; it's also been a way of keeping my son's memory alive. I know my brief memories of Jesse will always be a part of me and those around me, but for 12 weekends over the past 12 years, hundreds of people have helped his memory burn brighter than I ever thought possible. And that means more than anyone will ever know.

His tournament has helped raise money for great causes, brought people together for a goal, created memories, forged friendships, given his older brother and younger sister something of his to look forward to...

In other words, he's helped shape this world that never got a chance to know him.

I didn't get a chance to spend as much time out at the ballpark this year as I normally do (health issues and limited internet access for updating all of you made that harder than normal). But when I left Creekside for the last time on Sunday, the sadness was overwhelming, knowing that this chapter of Jesse's story was closing.

But the thing about chapters is that they usually lead to the next one. And though I (and we) don't know what that is yet, I'm looking forward to whatever it could be.

This is me longwindedly saying thank you to everyone for these last 12 years of softball madness and fun. To everyone who has played, umped, donated time or money, volunteered in any way, set up, torn down, bought a raffle ticket, come out to see a band, flipped burgers, worked the concession stand, sold beer... Every single one of you is part of the JTC family, and I hope that Jesse would be proud of the legacy that is being left, and hopefully is waiting to be forged, in his memory and initials.

I can't say it enough. Thank you all for these last 12 JTC Tournaments.

Here's to whatever comes next.

With Love,
Jesse's Dad

So, for the final recap of the final JTC Tournament, I'm going to keep this short and sweet (at least as best as I can for this post...lol).

First off, thank you to The Big O Foundation and the Iowa City MISS Chapter for allowing us to raise money for your charities. One is a new charity, one is the reason we started raising money this way, and both are deserving of much more support!

Secondly, thanks to all the sponsors who have helped make this tournament possible all of these years. Although this endeavor has come to an end, your generosity will never be forgotten and always be appreciated.

Next, thank you to all the volunteers who have helped us, this year and previously. We put a lot of time into this (especially JP Cartier, who busts his ass for MONTHS getting sponsors and raffle donations), and we couldn't do this without everyone who helps us out, not only the days of the tournament, but everything leading up to it.

Finally, thank you to all the teams that have come out to play in our shindig, this year and all of the years previously. We aren't lying when we say this wouldn't be possible without all of you, especially the teams that have been with us since the very beginning. So, from all of us, from the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU!!!

We heard all weekend how much you all will miss the JTC every July, and that means the world to us. Thank you again for allowing us to be a part of your summer for the past 12 years! You'll be hearing from us again, as soon as we have our totals sorted. Until then, we hope you've all recovered (sorry for the late recap here), and we're sure our paths will all cross again sometime in the future!
