Dear Members & Guests,

We want to wish you a Happy New Year and we are hopeful you had enjoyable holidays. We unfortunately are forced to have to cancel our January meeting to start off 2024!

The City of Coral Springs continues to create new issues for our society and our long standing meeting location. The City of Coral Springs is now requiring the society to carry our own liability insurance. We have been working hard behind the scene, trying to resolve these problems so that we can begin the new year. We shall keep you updated.

Thank you for your patience.

Monday, August 21st, you wont want to miss our speaker Serena aka Lady Vanda from Lady Vanda Orchids, LLC in Miami. See below;

Hello, my name is Serena and I am Lady Vanda.
Like most growers, I started out as a hobbyist just like you. The name Lady Vanda started with my grandma. Once my collection got a bit out of hand, she started calling me 'Señorita Vanda' and 'Señorita de las Orquideas'. The latter is quite the mouthful, so I decided to translate 'Señorita Vanda', thus Lady Vanda was born. Lady Vanda started from my passion for orchids and nature in general. But I love to help others find their green thumb, even when they don't think they have one. I saw an opportunity to cater to the new generation of hobbyists.

Most people find orchids intimidating and hard to care for. I want everyone of all age groups to be interested in orchids. I want to help everyone start and grow their orchid collection. Through Lady Vanda Orchids my goal is to help everyone feel supported through their journey with orchid cultivation. Aside from education, my focus is to bring a wide variety of plants to our customers. From common Vanda Hybrids to lesser known miniature species, all plants sold are blooming size; most have previously bloomed several times and are well established.

Current inventory is a mixture of imported plants and plants we have grown from flasks purchased from other growers and hybridizers. In 2023, I am ramping up our breeding program and looking to bring many new crosses, especially some intergenerics to the market. We look forward to another year of service with our customers, educating and supporting them as well as bringing new orchids to their collections

CSOS is excited to announce our Monday, July 17th speaker will be Cielo Ojano from Sierra Madres Orchids & Bromeliads in Miami.

Cielo will be speaking on the 2 types of growth habits of Sympodial Orchids and Monopodial Orchids while identifying orchids of each group. He will cover the differences in their growth, light, watering, temperature and requirements for their proper care. This is a very informative presentation and slide show. He will also be furnishing plants for our raffle table!

ABOUT Cielo; My name is Cielo Ojano. I was born and raised in Cagayan Valley, Philippines where the famous Sierra Madre Mountain—home to over a thousand orchid species can be found. My birthplace remains to be the top producer of corn in the whole country and second in rice production. My family has an agriculture business back home where we operate an agri-supply, exotic plants, and orchid nursery.

At an early age, I was taught by my parents to plant crops, till the soil, plant the seeds, then water the plots. That’s how my passion for plants started, because it is not only our source of food but also our source of livelihood.

I am currently the community garden cultivator of Baptist Health of South Florida in South Miami Hospital, Doctor’s Hospital and West Kendall Baptist for their Grow to Heal Program.

In addition to farming, I studied Marine Transportation Major in Nautical Science and earned my Bachelor degree in 1992. I am a Merchant Marine by profession. I travelled the world for almost 3 decades. I served in the US Coast Guard since 2005 but decided to retire two years ago and put up this company, Sierra Madre Orchids and Bromeliads, to pursue my first love of growing exotic plants and orchids. My wife is a registered nurse and we immigrated here in 2004. I met a Filipino horticulturist in Redland, the late Mr. Robert Baterna. He was the head grower of Mr. Kendall. Mr. Baterna was my mentor and my inspiration. He taught me everything he knew about plants
