Beneath the calm waters of Biscayne National Park lies a world full of wonder. Colorful fish, thriving coral reefs, and hidden marine treasures remind us that some of the most extraordinary experiences happen just below the surface. 🐠

It’s nesting season, and sea turtles are returning to the shores of Biscayne and Dry Tortugas National Parks. 🐢

At Biscayne, the barrier islands provide critical habitat for nesting females and, later in the season, for the hatchlings making their first journey to the sea.

Today, every species of sea turtle is either threatened or endangered. The protection of their nesting habitat, the monitoring of their nests, and the research that informs their conservation all depend on the careful stewardship of these parks — and on the private support that makes that stewardship possible.

Through beach cleanups and sea turtle monitoring across Biscayne and Dry Tortugas National Parks, The Alliance supports the conservation work that keeps these ecosystems intact. And if you cannot make it out to the parks, you can still play a role. Your donations help protect the places these turtles have been returning to for generations.

If you’re visiting the parks this month, swipe to learn how small actions help protect nesting turtles and hatchlings.

Most visitors to Everglades National Park never get to see this side of the park.

This week, a small group of volunteers was invited behind the scenes at the South Florida Collections Management Center at the Daniel Beard Research Center, home to more than 73,000 preserved biological specimens and collections spanning over 450 years of South Florida history across five national parks.

We explored aisles of carefully preserved plants, shells, seahorses, taxidermied wildlife, and historic artifacts. We learned about conservation stories hidden in the collection, including a plume-hunting era hat that recalls a time when birds were being pushed toward extinction for fashion, and a sawfish rostrum from a species that is now endangered in U.S. waters.

Some discoveries were unexpected. Collections preserved using methods from another era now require arsenic warning labels. One shelf held boxes labeled “Python Diet Samples.” And tucked among the specimens were a few unforgettable museum characters.

My favorite was Bob, an American crocodile who has become something of a legend in the collection. Like many historic specimens, he reflects the taxidermy practices of another time—and let’s just say he’s every bit as memorable as the stories that surround him.

A huge thank you to the collections staff for sharing these remarkable collections and the work they do to preserve the natural and cultural history of South Florida for future generations.

Which specimen, artifact, or museum character caught your eye?
