Gables R.A.C.E.S. Coral Gables Emergency Communications Team We work closely with the City of Coral Gables and volunteer our manpower during times of need.

During events such as hurricanes, we communicate any pertinent conditions that are vital for the city to operate as it normally does. We are a team of volunteer amateur radio hobbyists who use our knowledge of the hobby for the greater good of the community.

It is with deep regret that I must inform you of the passing of Michael Erwin, AA8VX. Michael previously served as RACES Officer for the Coral Gables RACES group, and event coordinator for the Junior Orange Bowl Parade and other events in the South Florida area. Michael was a native of the Upper Peninsula Michigan area, and was residing in the Central Florida area. Prior to leaving South Florida, Michael taught Elementary and Middle School music at area schools such as Fienberg/Fisher K8 Center and Dr. Gilbert L. Porter Elementary School, as well as teaching keyboard and his native Cello. He also created the Dr. Gilbert L. Porter Elementary Amateur Radio Club (KG4PEK). Additionally, he served as a volunteer firefighter in Upper Michigan in different agencies, including as Chief of the Boon Township Fire Department.

In the South Florida Amateur Radio world, he leaves a legacy in his support of the City of Coral Gables, as leader and event coordinator. Following his departure from South Florida, Michael continued to support South Florida events and me personally. I would not be who I am as RACES Officer or event coordinator without his support and mentoring.

Please keep his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Whenever I receive any information regarding any services, I will pass them along to the group.

73,

Brandon G. Watson, N4BGW
RACES Officer, Coral Gables RACES Team

Attention Hams,

The Annual Wounded Warrior Freedom Ride is coming up on this Sunday March 31st. This is a charity ride to benefit the Achilles Team of Wounded Warriors Veterans that we have been supporting every year. Many of the Veterans who are amputees participate in the ride using special three wheeled “hand cycles” that allow them to pedal with their hands instead of their feet.

The ride starts with a lap on the Homestead Speedway racetrack, and then continues on the roads in South Dade and Florida City with routes varying from 11-100 Miles.

I am looking for communicators for the following positions:

-Net Control/Backup at Homestead Miami Speedway

-Start/Finish Line (Homestead Speedway)

-Rest Stops:
1) Patches - 335 South Krome Ave
2) Card Sound Toll Plaza
3) Circle K in Key Largo
4) Ernest F Coe Visitor center – Everglades National Park

Other Locations:

T-Bone (Card Sound Rd and CR 905)
AeroJet Missile Site in South Dade (Vehicular access to be determined)
We will also need some hams for Route Patrol (Patrolling the roads for cyclists that need assistance)

This is a fun and rewarding event for a great cause.

The ride starts around 7:00 AM and the last riders should be back around 2:00 PM. Depending on your assigned post, your start and end times will be somewhere within that window. If you have a preference for position, start time, or end time, let me know and I will try to assign you accordingly.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

This weekend, we were asked to assist a local charity ride by providing communications for a 40 mile ride through the Florida Everglades in an area without cellular or repeater coverage. The team, along with other local hams, worked together to set up battery/solar powered field stations along the route as well as manning rest stops and patrolling the route. The event was a huge success and the riders and event organizers were very grateful. This is how we shine as Amateur Radio Operators, providing a service that very few other groups can provide.

Gables R.A.C.E.S. is sad to report the passing of one of our long time team members, George Abrams K4PAA. George has been an integral part of Coral Gables R.A.C.E.S., volunteering at most of our events as well as many other Amateur Radio events in the community for many, many years. We have been honored to call him a team member and friend and will miss him immensely. "T-Bone" will never be the same. R.I.P. George.
