My new book, "The Toy of the Wealthy: The Internet in Cuba."

Fidel Castro (1925-2016), the former Cuban dictator, had a complex relationship with the Internet. In the early years of the Internet, he expressed skepticism about its potential and dismissed it as a tool of the United States. In a 1996 speech, he famously referred to the Internet as “the toy of the wealthy” and called it a “new way to exercise colonialism.”
He made several statements about the Internet during his political life, and one of them, in which he referred to the Internet as “the plaything of the rich,” became famous worldwide. In his May 28, 1999, speech to the Cuban National Assembly of People’s Power, Castro noted that while the Internet had changed the world and provided new opportunities for development and communication, it had also created significant inequalities between wealthy and impoverished countries. In his speech, Castro criticized the digital divide between rich and poor countries and advocated for equal access to technology and digital services.
That, thus, is the title of this book: The Toy of the Wealthy: The Internet in Cuba.
