The Fetal Institute Foundation

The Fetal Institute Foundation By supporting research initiatives, we strive to continuously improve survival rates for babies with fetal disorders.

Goals and Plans:

Research Advancement: We aim to facilitate cutting-edge research in the field of fetal therapy, fostering the development of new treatment methods and surgical techniques. Medical Device Development: The treatment of different fetal conditions often requires specialized medical devices, and there is a shortage of such devices in the field of fetal therapy. The Fetal Institute Fou

ndation, in collaboration with other not-for-profit organizations, is committed to developing and manufacturing medical devices specific to fetal therapy. Our goal is to address this unmet need, catalyzing progress in the field. Awareness and Advocacy: We aim to raise awareness about fetal therapy and the importance of early intervention to improve outcomes for babies with fetal disorders. Through educational initiatives and advocacy efforts, we plan to increase understanding and support for our cause within the medical community and among the general public. Collaboration: We seek partnerships with healthcare professionals, researchers, other nonprofit organizations, and stakeholders in the field of fetal therapy. Collaborative efforts will help us pool resources, share expertise, and accelerate progress towards our goals. Company Website:

πŸ’• Today is , a global day dedicated to generosity, hope, and impact.
The Fetal Institute Foundation advances research, education and innovation in Fetal Therapy and Fetal surgery, to help improve pregnancy outcomes for fetuses diagnosed with life-threatening conditions. The Foundation exists to ensure that families facing these diagnoses have real options, real hope, and access to the most advanced fetal therapies available today.

Why Your Donation Matters

Research and clinical innovation that leads to safer, more effective fetal treatments, development of new technologies to improve outcomes before birth, training programs that equip more specialists worldwide, and support initiatives that help families access care during critical moments.

The Fetal Institute Foundation was founded by Dr. Eftichia Kontopoulos and Dr. Ruben Quintero, two internationally recognized pioneers in fetal therapy and the physicians behind The Fetal Institute. Their vision, scientific leadership, and groundbreaking contributions to fetal medicine are the driving force behind the Foundation’s mission.

As leaders in the field, Dr. Kontopoulos and Dr. Quintero have developed and performed some of the world’s first and most advanced in-utero procedures, offering life-saving options for conditions such as Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS), congenital tumors, open spina bifida, and other complex fetal anomalies. Their clinical breakthroughs constitute the basis of the research, innovation, and education initiatives of The Fetal Institute Foundation.

πŸ’™ Today is TTTS Awareness Day! πŸ’™

Today we honor TTTS Twin-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) patients and survivors

TTTS is a complex and serious complication that can occur in pregnancies with monochorionic twins, where the fetuses share a common placenta and blood vessels. In TTTS, the sharing of blood between the twins becomes imbalanced, leading to a donor fetus (losing blood) and a recipient fetus (receiving too much blood). If left untreated, this imbalance can result in the loss of one or both babies or the entire pregnancy in up to 95% of cases.

TTTS can be treated before birth through a groundbreaking laser surgical technique that occludes the placental blood vessels responsible for the abnormal blood sharing. This procedure helps restore balance and increase the chances of a successful pregnancy.

We are incredibly proud to have pioneered this laser surgical technique at The Fetal Institute, with over 25 years of experience in treating TTTS patients. We have achieved the highest reported survival rate, giving hope to families around the world.

The Quintero Staging System, named after our very own Dr. Ruben Quintero, is the internationally recognized method for assessing the severity of TTTS cases. Developed decades ago, it remains a highly cited and accurate tool for classifying TTTS severity and guiding treatment decisions.
