Asylum Project NGO

Asylum Project NGO It is The Asylum Project’s purpose to keep safe and protect the most vulnerable among us, including the LGBTQ+ community, disabled, and BIPoC citizens.

Founded in 2025, The Asylum Project’s mission is to provide a safe and stable living situation within the borders of a European Union country that is open to U.S. citizens seeking asylum from local, state, or Federal agencies. In a relatively short period of time, we have been able to begin raising funds for a down payment on a property in Portugal through crowdsourcing via social media. Our Found

er, Jonathan Jones, has received accolades for his vision and commitment to this project and has gained a significant social media following through his informational videos on passport applications and other pertinent information on leaving the country.

For a long time, my “Plan B” was just a folder on my laptop titled Tax Documents. It was a lie I told myself so I wouldn’t have to admit I was afraid.

November Progress Report: New Team, New Momentum, and a Turning Point ✨

This month was huge for us.
We welcomed new board members, new volunteers, and a wave of community support that reminds us why this mission matters so deeply.

💠 New Chairman & Secretary
💠 Growing volunteer interest
💠 Continued administrative progress
💠 Real-world hurdles (insurance, paperwork, all the fun stuff)
💠 A clear shift in momentum — people are watching, supporting, and joining us

Building a safe path for Pride, BIPOC, and Disabled communities isn’t simple…
But every new supporter reminds us why we keep moving forward.

We’re growing.
We’re learning.
And we’re building this together. 🖤🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

Sometimes the loudest part of leaving isn’t the airport or the paperwork.
It’s the silence from the people who were supposed to fight for you.

In this new Crossings story on Crossing Points, a Korean American non-binary writer shares how family fear, relentless anti-LGBTQIA+ policies, and a thousand quiet microaggressions pushed them toward a different kind of refuge—one where their existence isn’t a political debate, just a fact.

They found language, options, and a path forward through The Asylum Project’s resources on study, work, and business visas abroad—and the possibility of a life where they don’t have to shout to be heard.

This week wasn’t an easy one.
Some of our insurance applications came back with requests for information we don’t have—asking us to “estimate” where facts should be. And the Supreme Court issued a decision allowing the administration to deny passports based on changes in sexual identity, even while lawsuits are still in progress.

But there was hope: a powerful potential addition to our team reached out. Her experience and leadership could help us better navigate the rapid shifts happening behind the scenes.

The landscape is changing. We’re changing with it.
And we’re still moving forward—together.

🧨 This isn’t about one bill. It’s about the system they’re building to erase us.

Our latest Signal Fire breaks down how national policy is actively endangering:

🏳️‍⚧️ LGBTQIA+ communities
✊ BIPoC communities
♿ Disabled and chronically ill communities

From banning gender-affirming care and gutting Medicaid…
To dismantling education rights and slashing voting access…
The threats are real, coordinated, and accelerating.

🕊️ The holidays can be beautiful—and brutal—when your heart is already planning its exit.

At The Asylum Project, we know how complicated this season can feel. When you’re holding grief, guilt, love, and longing all at once… it’s hard to explain. So we wrote a Compass article for exactly that feeling.

Whether you’re quietly planning to leave, waiting for permission to start, or grieving what hasn’t ended yet—this post is for you.

You’re not broken.
You’re not alone.
And you’re allowed to dream of something safer.

Our newest Dispatch is now published, and it’s a big one.
November was a month of major structural growth for The Asylum Project — from adding six new board members across two meetings, to adopting new bylaw amendments, to completing 50+ policies and five organizational handbooks.

Behind the scenes, the workload has been intense, but we’re moving forward with purpose. We’ve integrated targeted AI tools and welcomed an Executive Assistant to help keep our operational and compliance systems strong.

In December, we’re focusing on:
• completing compliance training for staff, volunteers, and board members
• releasing the Winter edition of Checkpoints
• growing our Discord community
• preparing our educational series for launch in January

We’re grateful for every person walking this road with us.

This week was tough.
Some days were harder than others.
But the mission never wavered.

At The Asylum Project, we’re still in the trenches—reviewing policies, managing systems, and navigating complex questions like insurance coverage for a future international nonprofit. It’s not easy work.

But even in the middle of all that…

💡 People are reaching out.
💬 Asking how to help.
🛠️ Wanting to build with us.

That’s the signal we’ve been waiting for.
That’s the only metric that matters.

“It’s not just the money. It’s the message.”

This week’s Crossings story is one of grief, resistance, and quiet courage.

When a federal benefit was cut, Alex—a Black, q***r, disabled professional—lost more than just access to care. They lost the fragile peace they’d built around surviving in the U.S.

What came next wasn’t giving up. It was choosing to fight in a new way: by imagining a life built around belonging.
