🌼🌿 Native Plant Spotlight: Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) 🌿🌼

Have you spotted delicate white flower clusters blooming along roadsides, meadows, or open sunny areas right now? That’s yarrow—a hardy native plant doing a lot of quiet heavy lifting in the Coquille Watershed! 💧

🌱 Why yarrow matters:
🐝 Supports pollinators like bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects
🌿 Helps stabilize soils and reduce erosion in disturbed areas
💧 Thrives in dry, tough conditions—helping protect ground cover where other plants struggle
🌼 Provides important habitat diversity across our watershed

Yarrow is one of those plants that reminds us: even the smallest blooms can play a big role in keeping our landscapes healthy and resilient. 💚

Next time you’re out exploring, keep an eye out for its soft white flower clusters—and let us know where you see it! 📸👇

We are pleased to have worked with the Coquille Class of 2028 on this wonderful project! Hands on learning, exposure to jobs in the natural resources field and discussions about stream health provided a perfect capstone to the end of the school year. Thank you, Coquille School District!

🌊 Today is World Ocean Day!

Did you know the Coquille Watershed plays a vital role in the health of our ocean? The Coquille River flows directly into the Pacific Ocean—meaning what happens upstream impacts everything downstream, all the way to the sea.

💧 What we put into our rivers and streams matters.
🐟 Clean water supports salmon and countless other species.
🌎 Healthy watersheds help keep our ocean thriving.

Let’s all do our part to keep our waters clean—for our community, our wildlife, and our ocean. 💙

Our team has been busy with meeting, planning for projects and more! Here is a quick glimpse into a recent day... Two of our team members traveled south for a Gorse Action Group meeting and then toured some recent work and some new "hot spots" for invasive weeds. During a stop in the dunes, we discovered a patch of Sanddune Phacelia that was being taken over by rattlesnake grass and other invasives. Because we were with state level colleagues, we were able to spontaneously have a work party to help this threatened species have a better opportunity to thrive. If you see this beautiful little plant, give it some space and leave it alone! (We were working with officials making it legal to clear around the plants.)

Recently our Outreach & Education Specialist was able to support Oregon Shores in Bandon during a day with local school students! What a fun and exciting event. We helped students discuss ways that plastics enter the waterways and how we can prevent that. The students also created one panel per class of a surprise mural.

See some of their ideas below as well as the completed mural designed by Elizabeth Roberts.

It was an honor to help students see how they can make change and be !

We are out and about.... follow us so you don't miss any of our updates!

It’s Wild Salmon Day, and we’re joining the team at the Wild Salmon Center in celebrating one of the most resilient species in our rivers 💙🐟

Salmon are built for the journey—navigating miles of river, ocean, and back again. But they can’t do it alone.

Here are a few important reminders for today:

✨ Healthy rivers = healthy salmon
Restoring salmon rivers starts with protecting and rebuilding the habitats they depend on.

🌿 Restoration works
When we reconnect rivers and restore estuaries, salmon populations respond. We’ve seen it happen.

⚠️ The time to act is now
Salmon are facing serious challenges—nearly two-thirds of Pacific salmon are below their long-term averages.

A future with wild salmon is still possible—but it depends on what we do today.
