🌙🚒 Late-Night Backcountry Rescue

While most of the Copper Basin was settling in for the night Thursday, Copper Basin Fire & Rescue was heading into the Cherokee National Forest.

At approximately 11:30 p.m. Thursday night, CBFR was dispatched for a mountain biker who had injured their knee and was unable to make it out of the forest.

Crews arrived at the access point around 1:30 a.m., unloaded a UTV, and began making their way into the forest to locate the injured rider.

About three miles in, crews encountered a tree blocking the roadway. After stopping to remove the tree and clear a path, they continued approximately another mile before locating the rider.

The patient was safely transported by UTV back out of the forest and returned to their vehicle, and crews cleared the scene in the early morning hours Friday.

Backcountry calls can present some unique challenges—distance, darkness, rough terrain, and sometimes a tree in the way—but our volunteers are ready to respond wherever the call takes us.

We’re glad this rider made it out safely, and we wish them a quick recovery!

Yesterday, Copper Basin Fire & Rescue responded to a structure fire at Whitewater Express.

We are thankful for the quick response and assistance from Wolf Creek Fire Department, Hiwassee Dam Fire Department, AmeriPro, and Tri-State Electric. Working together helps us protect our community safely and effectively.

At the time of the incident, Whitewater Express was also hosting a youth camp. We are grateful to report that there were no reported injuries.

Thank you to everyone involved for your professionalism, teamwork, and commitment to keeping our community safe.

🚨 FREE BOTTLED WATER DISTRIBUTION – TUESDAY, AUGUST 4 🚨

Thanks to the continued generosity of Tarver Distributing, Crystal Geyser, and Andy Jones of Hwy. 64, bottled water distribution will continue Tuesday, August 4.

📍 Location: Piggly Wiggly, Ducktown (Hwy. 64)
🕙 Time: Beginning at 10:00 AM

Water is available for flood-affected residents and area first responders while supplies last.

Thanks to the generosity of Harbor Distributing, Crystal Geyser, and Andy Jones of Hwy. 64, a 53-foot trailer of bottled water is on its way to the Copper Basin!

Water is available for flood-affected residents and area first responders while supplies last.

👀 Look for the Bud Light trailer, tent, and pallets of water.

Today's flooding response was a true example of neighbors helping neighbors, and Copper Basin Fire & Rescue would like to express our sincere appreciation to everyone who answered the call.

A special thank you to Wolf Creek Fire & Rescue Department, Hiwassee Dam Fire Department, and Peachtree Fire & Rescue for their assistance with water rescues on the Ocoee River and their help with cleanup efforts.

We also appreciate the assistance of the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Fannin County Fire Rescue and the McCaysville Police Department, whose coordinated response across the Tennessee-Georgia state line helped keep our communities and visitors safe.

This morning, 13 visitors from Florida, Middle Tennessee, and Puerto Rico became stranded by rapidly rising floodwaters and were safely evacuated to the Copper Basin Fire & Rescue shelter.

A heartfelt thank you to Myrtle's Cafe that generously donated meals for our evacuees and first responders, Copperhill Brewery for coordinating the food delivery, and the American Red Cross TN Region for providing care and support at the shelter.

Finally, thank you to our own firefighters, volunteers, dispatchers, EMS personnel, public works crews, and everyone who lent a helping hand throughout this event. We are fortunate to serve a community where people step up for one another without hesitation.

Recovery efforts will continue over the coming days as crews work to repair roads and clean up flood damage. We ask everyone to please be patient, respect all road closures and traffic control measures, and give emergency crews and road workers the space they need to work safely.

Together, we are stronger. 🚒❤️

Community Update from Copper Basin Fire & Rescue
Last night's heavy rainfall brought significant flooding to portions of the City of Copperhill and our neighboring community of McCaysville. Several roadways were impacted, and emergency crews worked throughout the night to respond to flooding and assist those affected.
We ask everyone to continue using caution as recovery efforts continue. Please do not drive or walk through flooded roadways or around barricades. Even after the water recedes, roads may have sustained damage that is not immediately visible. Follow all road closure notices and use alternate routes until affected areas have been declared safe.
We would like to thank our firefighters, law enforcement officers, public works crews, EMS personnel, utility workers, and our mutual aid partners for their dedication and teamwork throughout this event. We are grateful for the continued support and cooperation of our community.
Our thoughts are with the families, businesses, and property owners who experienced flooding or damage. Recovery will take time, but our communities have always come together during difficult times, and we know that spirit will continue in the days ahead.
Please continue to monitor official announcements from the City of Copperhill, the City of McCaysville, and local emergency management agencies for updates on road closures and recovery efforts.
