Press Release: Continued Suspension of Services at the Nancy Devereux Center
Newmark Location
For Immediate Release
Date: November 11th, 2024
The Nancy Devereux Center announces that services at our Newmark location will remain temporarily suspended as we continue our dedicated efforts to improve our operations, address
community concerns and realign with our mission to serve those in need.
Following a recent City Council meeting on November 5, 2024, the City of Coos Bay has agreed to postpone the revocation process of our business license in recognition of the meaningful progress we have made in strengthening our organization and becoming a better neighbor. This decision reflects the ongoing collaboration between the Nancy Devereux Center and the City to ensure that our operations positively impact the community. As we refine our policies, procedures, and mission, we recognize the importance of including the community in this process. Moving forward, we will actively seek input and feedback from community members, clients, and local partners to ensure that our plans are collaborative and
reflect the needs and values of those we serve. By fostering open communication and transparency, we aim to rebuild trust and strengthen our relationships with the community.
In addition, we are actively seeking a new Executive Director who can lead the Nancy Devereux Center with passion, vision, and a commitment to collaboration. This new leadership role will be critical as we continue our work to positively impact Coos Bay and the surrounding area.
We appreciate the community’s patience and support as we take these steps to strengthen the Nancy Devereux Center. Updates on our progress, opportunities for feedback, and plans for reopening will be shared as we move forward. Our goal is to return stronger, more effective, and more aligned with the needs of our clients and the community.

People Helping People

The Devereux Center offers support systems and advocacy for the homeless, those suffering from mental illness, and veterans. Also known as the Nancy Devereux Center, we are a 501(C)3 tax-exempt non-profit organization founded in 1979. The Center is a day facility that is open from 9 am to 2 pm every week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.

We offer our regular constituency and community members a free, nutritious meal, as well as laundry and showers. The food for these meals is largely provided through the generosity of the Oregon Coast Community Action’s “Food Share Program”, as well as generous donations from various local businesses and private individuals.

The Nancy Devereux Center works on a limited budget and volunteer staff. We have about a dozen dedicated volunteers working every week. Our volunteers have working relationships with local social, health, and legal services to ensure help for our clients and residents as needed.

Some volunteers cook and serve food. Others reach out in the community to help people find work while others apply for grants to continue and expand our services. We are strengthening our local network to help people find affordable housing, work and food. We strive to put a positive view on the abilities of our people and dispel the stigma associated with homelessness and mental illness. At the Devereux Center, we encourage education and provide advocacy and support.
