Tom Walsh of Worcester is planning a hiking challenge to raise funds for Otsego Outdoors and the Bassett Cancer Institute. This is Tom's seventh charity hike, and he will attempt to complete the Northville/Lake Placid Trail southbound as a 138-mile thru-hike.

This is community. This is conservation in action. This is OCCA. Thank you to all of our amazing volunteers, staff, community members, and partners. We couldn’t make as big of an impact without you 🩵

Special shout out to the Dave Brandt Chapter 210 of Trout Unlimited who is pictured hauling out a giant tire from the Susquehanna River.

Have you seen murky or bright green water at Otsego Lake or Canadarago Lake? Like paint was spilled or pea soup escaped someone's kitchen? You might have seen a Harmful Algal Bloom! The bad news is that it poses a big risk to the health of humans, pets, and wildlife. The good news... you can help! OCCA, Otsego Lake Association, Cooperstown, NY and Canadarago Lake Improvement Association are looking for volunteers to help monitor the shoreline once a week this summer through early fall. Surveys should take around 20 minutes, and is best for those who live on, work on, or have regular access to lake shoreline. An easy, online training is also required.

To sign up to monitor at Otsego Lake: occainfo.org/otsegolake
To sign up to monitor at Canadarago Lake: occainfo.org/canadaragolake

or email [email protected]

Please tag or share with your friends and neighbors who might want to monitor from their own dock, boat, or stretch of shoreline!

A BIG applause 👏 for our community of volunteers and participants in this year’s Drive-Through Drop-Off recycling event, who braved the rain in the name of recycling ♻️ Thousands of pounds of e-waste, plastics, cork, styrofoam, and textiles were diverted from the landfill this past weekend.

We were asked many times where all the stuff goes… and the answer is… all over the place! That’s why we are passionate about offering this event each year. OCCA’s goal is to make recycling a bit easier for our community. We partner with and utilize the services of various recycling companies and community partners including Helpsy, Terracycle, Greendisk, CNY Veterans Outreach Center, Confidata, The Otsego Reuse Center, Dave Brandt Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Evolve Recycling, and more each year to accept hard-to-recycle items such as paper shredding, textiles, styrofoam, cork, coffee pods, christmas lights, VHS, CDs, cassette tapes, ink and toner cartridges, toothbrushes, floss containers, toothpaste tubes, and fishing line.

Interested in supporting this type of conservation? Consider becoming an OCCA member or donor. The funds received directly support what we are able to offer each year at Drive-Through Drop-Off. Visit occainfo.org/membershipsignup or occainfo.org/donate
