Today, we met with the district again.

In the words of AHEM President John Wolhaupter, “This was our fourth mediation session, and we came to the table hopeful. Unfortunately, the district presented a proposal that we could not responsibly bring forward to our members for a vote.

Today’s offer would still force some educators to take an effective pay cut just to keep their health insurance. That is unacceptable.”

Anoka-Hennepin Schools has the financial capacity to reach a fair agreement.

“We’ve done the research,” Wolhaupter said. “The money is there. What’s missing is the willingness to prioritize educators and the stability of our schools.”

At this juncture, the issue facing us all is the unwillingness of certain Anoka-Hennepin School Board members to broaden the financial parameters in order to reach a fair settlement.

Again, in John’s words “Our goal has not changed. We want a fair contract that addresses insurance affordability and compensation, keeps educators in their classrooms and avoids a strike. We are prepared to return to mediation on Friday ready to do the work.”

Today, we head into mediation with the district.

While negotiations continue, you can take action by contacting the school board and calling on them to avoid a strike and invest in the safe, stable schools Anoka-Hennepin students and educators deserve.

Two weeks ago, 98.5% of us voted to authorize a strike.

Last week, President John Wolhaupter hand-delivered our intent to strike to Anoka-Hennepin Public Schools’ administration.

Tomorrow, we meet to bargain again in an attempt to avert a strike.

Next week, we walk out if the Anoka-Hennepin school board doesn’t act.

What we are asking for is not too much to ask. The School Board has the means at their disposal to settle a fair contract.

“We welcome the Minnesota Bureau of Mediation Services’ decision to schedule a mediation session on Dec. 29. Any opportunity to bring the parties back together at the table is a positive step, and we appreciate the Bureau’s continued involvement.

Our educators want nothing more than to reach a fair contract settlement that allows us to remain in our classrooms and continue serving our students and families. As we’ve said all along, we are ready to do whatever it takes to reach an agreement that addresses the very real needs our members have raised — including affordable health insurance and compensation that keeps educators from going backwards. A strike is not inevitable. There is still time to settle this contract, and we will come to mediation prepared to work toward a resolution.” John Wolhaupter, AHEM President

STRIKE AUTHORIZED! Our members voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike if necessary. 98.5% of Anoka-Hennepin educators authorized a strike due to deep concerns about the district’s continued refusal to address unaffordable health insurance costs and non-competitive pay—issues that directly impact classroom stability and student learning.

Educators do not want to strike. They want to remain in their classrooms serving students and families. This vote is about ensuring the district takes seriously the need to reach a fair contract that supports educators, stabilizes schools and puts students first. We are !

Polls are open!

Now through Saturday, we’ll raise our voices to show that we’re united and won’t accept a false “either-or” position from the district that forces us to choose between relief from skyrocketing health insurance costs or minimal wage increases.

Head to one of the three voting locations to make your voice heard. Polls are open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. today through Friday, and 7 a.m.-noon Saturday at strike HQ only.
