4. Looking at the Messiah or seeing the Kingdom revealed.

Christ is more than Mary’s Son of the line of David of the Tribe of Judah. Those were the physical instruments God employed to reveal the Eternal Word––God made Flesh. Jesus, in the words of the writer of the Hebrews, is God’s Final Speech (Hebrews 1:2). This means that all Father ever said previously was type and shadow for the Word to be made Flesh and that Speech cannot be changed or added to in any manner. This can be inconvenient enlightenment to many who have been caught in the natural and find themselves looking at the feasts, the holy days, and the future in a most literal manner. With all love and sincerity, I appeal to you to stop and ask Father if you are looking at or seeing through. No matter what it costs, we need to see what the greater spiritual issues are and allow God to pe*****te our soulish understanding. We need a greater understanding of what it means to “see the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6).

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. -2 Corinthians 4:6 NIV

3. Looking at my reward or seeing the Kingdom in glory.

When we are unable to see through, we become a stumbling block or an offense. In Matthew 16:24 Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to be My disciple, let him deny himself [disregard, lose sight of, and forget himself and his own interests] and take up his cross and follow Me [cleave steadfastly to Me, conform wholly to My example in living and, if need be, in dying, also].”

We cannot deny ourselves unless we can see through.

Looking at the son of Joseph or seeing the Word made flesh. Many people in Jesus’ home town were scandalized by Him. After all, wasn’t He just Joseph’s son? Didn’t they know Him since he was a boy? They could not see through. Just after Jesus gave the lesson of the bread, He went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and asked His disciples:

“Who do people say that the Son of Man is? And they answered, Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets. He said to them, But who do you [yourselves] say that I am? Simon Peter replied, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Then Jesus answered him, Blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied) are you, Simon Bar-Jonah. For flesh and blood [men] have not revealed this to you, but My Father Who is in heaven.” (Matthew 16:13-17)

The opinions about Jesus’ identity were everywhere. Then, in verse 15, He says, who do you say that I am? Peter, being able to see through, said, “Oh! I know Who You are. You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God. You’re the coming One! You are the Messiah, I know Who You are!” Jesus said, “Ah, My Father showed you that.” Peter saw through who Jesus was physically and perceived His real nature. For a Hebrew, this was a major step. In the next verse Jesus said, “On that I can build.” When we are able to see through instead of looking at, we are someone on whom God can build.

There are four biblical lessons in scriptural sequence that allow us to understand the importance of seeing through.

1. The lesson of the bread.
How is it that you fail to understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But beware of the leaven (ferment) of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Then they discerned that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. (Matthew 16:11-12)

I can imagine one of the disciples in the boat asking, “Did He say we forgot to bring the lunch?” They were looking at the bread not seeing through the bread to what Jesus was really talking about. Seeing through the bread allows us to understand Jesus’ lesson about the danger of Pharisaical influence. He was warning us that we can turn into a Pharisee in about 30 minutes if we don’t see through the issues.

Dealing with that Other God Plumbline by Bob Mumford

In this Plumbline I am seeking to explore and unfold with you “that other god.” Its name is mammon. Jesus identified it in His sermon on the mount when He said, “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon” (Matt 6:24).

Two things are important to note in Jesus’ statement. First, Jesus personifies mammon making it equal with God as to its potential strength of influence on our lives. Second, we can only serve and be ruled by one god at a time; the governing influence of one negates the influence of the other. According to Jesus we must make a choice of which one will be our master.
