PCAR Collaborates with The Mayor’s Reading Program
On Wednesday, July 9, PCAR, along with several other local organizations such as The Boys and Girls Club and The Georgia American Mothers Association, City Staff members, and community leaders joined Mayor Connie Alsobrook at City Hall for The Mayor Reading program. Mayor Alsobrook and City Staff members read to children about what a Mayor does to help lead and support a city. Children who attended, along with the book reading, enjoyed a child-friendly activity, snacks, and a city tour. All children who attended also received a certificate from the Mayor for participating in the program. As a partner, PCAR helped organize this event and provided books and supplies for the children who attended. Moreover, books and materials were donated by the Georgia Department of Early Learning. Children at the July 9 event and the upcoming July 22 event each can get a free book when they attend.
What is the Mayor’s Reading Club?
The Mayor’s Reading Club is a community-driven literacy initiative that positions mayors as visible champions for reading and early learning. It is designed to be flexible, allowing cities of all sizes to adapt the program to their local needs, schools, libraries, and community partners.
Purpose and Mission
The program’s goal is to inspire a love of reading in children and support literacy development from an early age. It shifts literacy from a solely school responsibility to a community-wide effort, ensuring that reading is encouraged, supported, and accessible for all.

• Mayor’s Leadership: Mayors lead the initiative, often organizing school visits, public reading events, and citywide literacy campaigns.
• Community Engagement: Schools, libraries, families, and local organizations collaborate to promote reading, connect residents with resources, and create environments where books are valued.
• Early Literacy Focus: Many programs target children from birth through kindergarten, aiming to make them “Ready Readers and Ready Learners” before they start school
