Granville T. Woods (1856-1910)
Born in Ohio in 1856, worked as a railroad engineer while studying engineering and electricity. His first invention was an improved steam boiler system. In 1887, he developed his most famous work, the induction telegraph, an improved telephone transmitter that allowed voice communication over telegraph wires. Thomas Edison sued him that year, but Woods successfully defended his patent and won. He eventually secured over 60 patents and died in New York in 1910.

Marie Van Brown (1922–1999) was a nurse who invented the first home security system in 1966. Motivated by the rising crime in her Queens, New York, neighborhood and a desire to protect her home, she created a system that included a security camera, two-way microphones, and an alarm button, which could directly contact the police. Her design laid the foundation for modern home security systems, and her patent has continued to influence inventors, being cited as recently as 2013.

Daniel Hale Williams -Daniel Hale Williams was an African American cardiologist born in Chicago in 1856 who overcame early family hardship, such as being the eldest of 8 and losing his father early in his life, and pressure to stay in the family barbering business to earn his M.D. from the University of Chicago in 1883. In 1891, he performed the first successful open-heart surgery on a human, and in 1889, he had already achieved the major milestone of being appointed to the Illinois State Board of Health during a time of intense racism. In 1894, he became Chief Surgeon at Freedmen’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., and after a long career of saving lives and paving the way for Black physicians, he died of a stroke in 1931 at the age of 75.
