Campbell began his Air Force career as a pilot and went on to serve in a variety of increasingly responsible assignments. His military experience included combat service as an F-100 pilot in South Vietnam and service as an F-4D pilot in the United States and Thailand. He later served as an instructor pilot, fighter tactics analyst, flight commander, operations officer, and senior staff officer. His assignments took him to Air Force installations throughout the United States and to U.S. Air Forces in Europe.

He also served as secretary of the Joint Requirements Oversight Council, coordinating joint staff actions and representing the interests of combatant commanders in matters involving requirements, acquisition, and defense planning and budgeting.
Continued Leadership in Aerospace and Technology
Following his military career, Campbell continued serving the nation and the aerospace industry. From 2000 to 2002, he served as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Tidelands Technology Corporation. In that role, he oversaw advanced research and development programs and the integration of emerging technologies into applications serving domestic and international customers.
Among his accomplishments at Lockheed Martin was conceiving and developing a major integration laboratory facility in Suffolk, Virginia, designed to enable large-scale integration of civilian and military products and services.
