"One spring afternoon, about fifty years ago, Doug Burnell stepped off Little Chatham Road, once known as Ridge Road, and followed his grandfather into the woods. Walter Burnell was ninety then, still steady on his feet and carrying a lifetime of knowledge about the land he had pieced together over decades. This was the south end of Walter’s property, a patchwork of woodlots that would come to be known as Burnell Ridge. Doug, newly returned to Conway and already working as a surveyor, walked beside him, ready to learn.

They didn’t get far before things went a little sideways..."

Beaver Deceivers? You better believe(rs)!

Chain of Ponds is an ecological relic of what the whole of the Northern U.S.A. used to look like, and Beavers are the key to this uniquely spectacular space, their dams creating critical habitat for plants and animals alike. However, newer human infrastructure aren't built with beavers in mind, leading to the flooding of the tracks that run through COP. To solve this issue Skip Lisle has invented the Beaver Deceiver - a contraption that controls water levels while letting the beavers continue to build and live in peace. USVLT excitedly continues to look for creative ways for our community to live alongside the wildlife that we serve and protect.

The White Mountain National Forest is the largest area of public land in New England — and it is actively managed to support healthy, resilient forests. On June 3, join White Mountain National Forest staff Roger Boyer and Jason Lyle for a talk on why and how forest management is used to support conservation, habitat diversity, and sustainable forest products. This event is part of the Sense of Place Speaker Series and will be hosted at Mad River Coffee House in Campton.
