🗓 | Next weekend (Saturday, October 24), join the chapter and Myrtle Beach State Park staff for a hands-on volunteer opportunity to help remove invasive plants from our maritime forest! Volunteers will work alongside park staff to remove invasive Ligustrum (privet) and Elaeagnus (thorny olive) using clippers and loppers.

After a volunteer cuts a plant, park staff will apply herbicide to the freshly cut branch to help prevent it from growing back. All tools and equipment will be provided.

🌼 | Thank you to everyone who joined us for The Extraordinary Caterpillar movie screening in downtown Conway! It was a perfect fall evening to sit on the terrace and learn about the fascinating world of caterpillars. We love this film from Homegrown National Park: homegrownnationalpark.org/extraordinary-caterpillar

🌼 | Last week, the chapter hosted our first “mothing” event in Huntington Beach State Park. This special nighttime excursion gave attendees the opportunity to observe nocturnal insects such as Ipsilon Dart Moth (𝘢𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘱𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘯) and Melsheimer’s Sack Bearer (𝘤𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪). Thank you to everyone who joined, and we look forward to hosting another in the future!

🌼 | We completed another Seabeach Amaranth monitoring survey. Due to the drought and early season king tides, there were less than previous years, but participants were still able to find around 90 naturally recruited plants!

🌼 | Volunteers were able to rescue rare plants prior to a road paving and ditch grading project near Loris. Savanna Indigo-bush (Amorpha confusa) is a SCDNR Heritage Program species of Highest priority for conservation and considered Critically Imperiled by NatureServe. This plant is known from 3 counties in NC and only 1 in SC. Luckily, it grows on the adjacent protected properties that are being managed with prescribed fire to maintain quality habitat conditions.

Over 80 plants were taken in by Brookgreen Gardens, Moore Farms Botanical Garden, NC Botanical Garden, and the SC Botanical Garden, as well as by several volunteers. Some plants will stay with the gardens while others will be cared for and planted on the adjacent properties this winter. These plants were really interesting with tough woody roots that grew laterally, some several feet long.

Thank you to Horry County and the engineers with Mead and Hunt who delayed the start of the construction to allow us to save these rare plants.

🌼 | Thank you to Maureen Mulligan from Georgetown County Solid Waste for coming up to teach a Compost 101 workshop for us! We had a great time learning all about composting and how to reduce our household and garden waste, turning it into fuel for our yards and gardens. Maureen also brought composting supplies, seeds, and native plants to share!

🌼 | In July we had two great bumble bee surveys, one at Lewis Ocean Bay and one at Brookgreen Gardens. We documented five different species and participants were able to get up close and personal with these charismatic pollinators. Thank you to everyone who joined. Stay tuned for more opportunities to get outside with the chapter!

📢 | The Grand Strand Chapter of the South Carolina Native Plant Society is accepting applications for our Fall 2026 Grant Program.

If your organization, community group, or school is interested in working with native plants in any capacity, we invite you to consider applying for a grant. Projects must be directed at protecting, restoring, and/or educating the public or students about native plants or plant communities in the Grand Strand region of South Carolina (including Florence, Georgetown, Horry, Marion, or Williamsburg counties). The Chapter anticipates funding 3 to 4 projects up to $1,500.

The deadline for applications is October 18, 2026. Grant awardees will be notified by November 15, 2026.
