Sustainability and Economics do not have to compete. 🌳

Our CEO, Stuart Allen, recently sat down with Sustainability Magazine to talk about why NativState exists and how we work with landowners across the Southeast.

The big idea is simple: forests have to work economically for the families who own them. Forest carbon gives landowners another option besides a heavy harvest or selling their land. They can earn income while managing their forests for wildlife, clean water, and long-term health.

And we don't just sign up a property and disappear. Our foresters stay involved for the life of every project, helping landowners adapt their plans as their forests grow.
Since 2021, that approach has returned more than $30 million directly to small private landowners. 💵🌲

Last week we had the honor of serving as Premier sponsor at the Arkansas Forestry Association Annual Meeting.

Arkansas is our home state, and we are always ready to connect with Foresters, Landowners, and so many other important folks who help make this industry work in our great state.

It was also great to see our awesome team members receive well-deserved recognition:
- Tim White and his wife Karen received the Arkansas Farm Tree System District 6 Farm Tree of the Year
- Kevin Wood spoke to the full audience about the emerging uses of AI in Forestry
- Claudia Vaughan graduated from AFA’s Emerging Leaders program

We’re proud to have these great folks on our team!

Ever had a snake open its mouth wide at you and flash bright white? 🐍 That's an eastern cottonmouth, and that white lining is how it got its name.

Cottonmouths live in swamps, marshes, ponds, ditches, and slow-moving streams across the Southeast, and you'll often spot them sunning on a log near the water. They aren't aggressive, but they will stand their ground if they feel threatened, so the best move is simply to give them space.

They're also often confused with nonvenomous watersnakes. A few ways to tell them apart:
👉 Cottonmouths have a thick, triangular head that's flat on top.
👉 Cottonmouths float high, swimming with their whole body on top of the water. Watersnakes usually swim with just their head above the surface.
👉 Young cottonmouths have bright, distinct bands and a yellow tail tip.

Have you ever seen one on your property? Tell us where in the comments!

Last week, we connected with many foresters and landowners across our home state at the Arkansas Forestry Association Annual Meeting.

We want to highlight AFA President's Award winner Mr. Larry Nance, a Consulting Forester who has been a great friend to NativState and Landowners as we've grown.

Congratulations to Mr. Nance and Thank You for your support!

Arkansas foresters and landowners, we'll see you in Hot Springs! 🌲

NativState is proud to sponsor the Arkansas Forestry Association Annual Meeting, Oct. 6–8. As an Arkansas-based company, this one feels like home, and we can't wait to catch up with landowners, foresters, and friends from across the state.

Don't miss our own Kevin Wood, Director of Wildlife and Ecology, on the AI in Forestry panel:
🗓️ Wednesday, Oct. 7
🕐 1–2 p.m.
Kevin will join Daniel Killebrew of Highland Pellets and Dr. Kyle Cunningham of the Arkansas Department of Agriculture's Forestry Division to talk about how new technology is shaping the way we manage and care for our forests.

While you're there, stop by and say hello! We'd love to talk about conserving the forest you have 🌳 or growing a new one 🌱.

🌲 This month's Species of the Month is one of the most recognizable trees in the Southeast: the bald cypress!

You've probably seen these trees standing knee-deep in swamp water, with their wide, flared trunks and those mysterious "knees" poking up around the base. But bald cypress isn't just scenic — it's doing serious work for the ecosystem.

These trees create nursery habitat for fish when floodwaters rise, provide nesting spots for birds like the swallow-tailed kite, and help filter and slow water moving through the forest before it reaches rivers downstream. Some bald cypress trees are also incredibly long-lived — over 1,000 years in some cases — which means they're locking away carbon for a very long time.

In projects like the Bottomland Forests of the Lower Mississippi Valley, bald cypress bottomlands are part of what makes the habitat so rich — proof that protecting forests for carbon also means protecting the wildlife and water that depend on them. 💧🌳

Today is World Rivers Day, and we're taking the chance to celebrate the parts of the watershed that don't get much credit.

Big rivers get all the attention, but they depend entirely on the small stuff: the creek behind a farm, the wet spot in the woods, the headwater stream you'd never notice from the road. These small forest water sources filter pollutants, cool the water for fish, and feed the larger rivers downstream, including the mighty Mississippi.

We work with landowners across the Southeast to protect exactly these places. Since 2021, that's meant safeguarding over 800,000 acres of forest and 3,000 miles of streams, many right here in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain.

So on World Rivers Day, we're thinking about all the "small" water that makes the big rivers possible. Read more about the unseen engines of the forest: https://hubs.li/Q04xydlD0

The forest you leave behind will speak for you.

Passing down acreage is important, but leaving future generations a healthy, thriving piece of land is even more important. Biodiversity is what makes that possible. A forest rich in plant and wildlife diversity has stronger soil, cleaner water, and greater resilience against drought, disease, and storms, so your land stays healthy for your kids, grandkids, and generations beyond that.

Enrolling in NativState's forest high-quality carbon credit program is one of the most direct ways to protect that legacy. You're paid to maintain the biodiversity that keeps your land strong for the long haul, while building a financial asset that can benefit your family for years to come.

It's not just about today's forest. It's about the one your grandchildren will inherit. Ready to protect what matters most? Let's talk. https://hubs.li/Q04xycHM0
