🏥 The vet said Jewels is doing great today!

🥰 We are so happy to see her on the road to recovery and finally starting to feel better. None of this would have been possible without our incredible supporters who stepped up to help when she needed it most. ❤️‍🩹

💎 Jewels Surgery Update 💎

Jewels is currently recovering from surgery, and we’re happy to share that everything went well. She was spayed to treat her pyometra, had the abscess on her head drained, underwent a dental procedure that required only one tooth extraction, and also had a wound under her arm repaired. She is recovering well and continues to be in great spirits.

Today, Jewels had X-rays to help the veterinary team determine the best path forward for her care.

The radiologist confirmed that Jewels has pyometra, a serious and potentially fatal uterine infection. Without surgery, pyometra will continue to make a dog extremely ill and can ultimately be fatal. As difficult as some of the decisions surrounding her care have been, spaying her was not optional if we wanted to give her a chance. Leaving the infection untreated would have meant continued suffering and, eventually, death from the pyometra.

The X-rays also showed pulmonary nodules in her lungs and an enlarged liver. At this time, there is no way to know exactly what the nodules are without additional testing. They could be related to cancer, heartworm disease, or another underlying condition.

Despite everything stacked against her, Jewels remains the happiest, sweetest, most bubbly girl. She has wonderful manners, loves everyone she meets, and her tail never stops wagging. She doesn’t know she’s supposed to feel defeated. She simply wakes up every day happy to be loved.

No matter how much time she has, Jewels deserves the chance to experience comfort, kindness, and a life where someone finally puts her first.

We still need help covering her medical expenses. Her estimate is $1,674, and thanks to your generosity, we have raised $594 so far. That leaves $1,080 still needed.

We’re urgently trying to raise the funds. Jewels has already been through so much, and now she finally has a chance to get the care she needs, but we can’t do it without help.

❤️‍🩹 We spoke with the vet about Jewels today, and unfortunately the news is concerning. ❤️‍🩹

The wounds on her head that were infected have now developed into abscesses, and her face and head are very swollen. Despite being on medication for several days, there has been little improvement. Our vet feels the best option is to put Jewels under anesthesia so the wounds can be properly opened, drained, and treated.

While she is under anesthesia, the vet would also like to spay her because there is concern that she may have an open pyometra, a serious uterine infection that can become life-threatening if left untreated.

As if that wasn’t enough, Jewels’ teeth are in terrible condition. Many are rotten, some are loose and wiggly, and several will likely need to be removed to help relieve her pain and prevent further infection.

This is so much for one little dog to carry. After years of neglect, her body is tired and beaten up, and we would be lying if we said we weren’t worried. But we trust our veterinarian, and we want to give Jewels every chance to finally be comfortable, healthy, and loved.

Jewels was recently diagnosed with lymphoma. Despite this diagnosis, she remains happy, active, and full of life. After discussing everything with our veterinarian, we would like to move forward with the surgeries and procedures they recommend to give her the best quality of life possible. Although her blood work results were not ideal overall, there is some encouraging news: her kidney and liver values look good, which helps support proceeding with the care she needs.

The reality is that all of this medical care comes with a significant cost, and we cannot do it alone.

Some days in rescue are incredibly sad and emotionally exhausting, and yesterday was one of those days. 🥹

Yesterday, I spoke with the veterinarian who has been caring for our sweet Jewels. After finding that all of her lymph nodes were extremely enlarged, the vet performed a biopsy. The results confirmed what we were fearing…our girl has lymphoma. ❤️‍🩹

Jewels is also battling advanced heartworm disease. Due to her bloodwork, the lymphoma diagnosis, and being heartworm positive, the veterinarian does not recommend putting her under anesthesia to drain her wounds or perform a spay surgery. Right now, she is receiving wound care and is on numerous medications to keep her comfortable and give her the best quality of life possible. 💊

Today, we will be speaking with the vet again to develop a more solid plan for Jewels moving forward. 👨🏻‍⚕️

We are in desperate need of donations to help cover her medical boarding and ongoing veterinary care. 💚

She may not have had a good life before Saturday, but we are going to make sure the rest of her life is filled with love, comfort, dignity, and the very best care possible. ♾️
