MATERIAL REUSE in ACTION ALERT: OLIVER’s LODGE Edition:

We’re happy to report a good bit of Oliver’s rare, locally milled materials have already found new homes with deep connections to Oliver’s and Murrells Inlet!l

More coming soon, but first up:

3000 square feet of Oliver’s Lodge’s old growth Longleaf Heart Pine T&G boards we recovered in the first few weeks of the deconstruction project will now be used to renovate a building in Marion, SC!

The building will soon be a boutique hotel and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

For those who don’t know, the Oliver’s lived in Marion before moving to Murrells Inlet!

Oliver’s Lodge Project Update:

We had several days of progress and finds this past week.

We have deconstructed much of the roofing elements and top floor of what we’re calling the East wing of Oliver’s.

We’ll report more soon on what we’re recovering, and it’s a lot and it’s beautiful!

This week we discovered two more MAKER’s MARKS by Captain “Billy” Oliver!

That makes 3!

The signatures so far are located at three major points in the building: 1) the roofing board at top of “West” Wing (that structure was made mostly from reclaimed 1860s materials); 2) Maker’s Marks now found on studs at inlet-facing side and 3) North-facing side of “East” Wing!

This links the two different building phases — the West Wing built first largely from earlier materials and the East Wing built second from early 1900s materials — together, to a single builder - W. L. Oliver - who started construction in 1910!

Happy Preservation Month!

Board by board, brick by brick, our community-driven nonprofit is saving Oliver’s Lodge fabrics and continuing the tradition of deconstruction and material reuse.

We estimate this single project will keep approximately 300 tons of rare, historic, and locally harvested building materials out of our landfills and for reuse.

Our region’s landfills are at capacity.

We are doing our part.

We look forward to local and state agencies doing theirs!
