Ever heard of cucumber root? 🌿🥒

While out at Cove Mountain Preserve, we spotted this native forest plant whose underground rhizomes have a mild, cucumber-like flavor, hence the name!

Cucumber root is part of a healthy woodland ecosystem and has a long history of use by Indigenous communities and early foragers. Today, plants like this remind us just how diverse (and fascinating) our native landscapes are.

Of course, we admire more than we harvest, protecting these habitats ensures species like cucumber root continue to thrive for years to come 💚

Just a shy little guy… caught in the middle of some important work! 😊

While pulling invasive plants at Cove Mountain Preserve, Preserve Manager Elizabeth spotted this Kentucky flat millipede hiding in the undergrowth.

These often-overlooked creatures play a big role in keeping forests healthy, breaking down organic matter and returning nutrients to the soil. But invasive plants can throw that balance off, crowding out the native habitat they rely on.

So while we may be disrupting a hiding spot in the moment, this work helps create a healthier, more resilient ecosystem for wildlife like this in the long run 🌿

Have you ever spotted a millipede while out on a hike?

The fifth annual Pennsylvania Native Species Day was a celebration of everything that makes our state's natural heritage so special! 🦋🌲

We loved tabling alongside amazing partners and connecting with Pennsylvanians who care deeply about protecting our native plants and wildlife. The passion and dedication across the Commonwealth is incredible.

At The Nature Conservancy, we're committed to keeping native species thriving through science-based stewardship, from prescribed burns that restore fire-adapted habitats to protecting critical wildlife corridors across the state.

A huge thank you to the Office of the Governor of Pennsylvania for recognizing the importance of this work and to everyone working to keep Pennsylvania's ecosystems healthy for both wildlife and people.

Fire can be a powerful tool for restoration! 🔥

On May 19, our team conducted a prescribed burn at Eales Preserve on Moosic Mountain. Fires, like this one, are an important part of how we care for and restore natural lands.

While it may look dramatic, prescribed fire is carefully planned and plays a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. It helps reduce invasive species, encourages native plants to grow, and improves habitat for wildlife.

This kind of hands-on conservation work supports stronger, more resilient landscapes across Pennsylvania.

Hundreds of tadpoles… all in one pond 👀🐸

“Frog Pond” at Cove Mountain Preserve is teeming with life right now, and this is just the beginning. In a few short weeks, these tiny swimmers will transform into frogs and disperse into the surrounding forest.

Moments like this are easy to miss, but they’re happening all around us in healthy habitats like this one!

Have you ever seen a pond full of tadpoles like this?

Rainy mornings and patient observers paid off across Pennsylvania this Migratory Bird Day 🐦💚

At Long Pond Barrens Preserve, 5 participants joined TNC volunteer Roger Spotts and recorded 22 bird species, highlighting the importance of this unique habitat for migratory birds!

Meanwhile, at Hamer Woodlands, 6 participants, led by Andy Dapkins of the Appalachian Audubon Society and TNC volunteer Hannah Hartman, also observed 22 bird species, proving that great birding moments happen wherever people and nature connect.

Thank you to our guides and participants for celebrating migration and raising awareness of the habitats birds depend on during their journeys.

Big landscapes. Big impact. 🌄

TNC’s Appalachians annual report is now live, highlighting the power of people working together to protect one of the most ecologically important regions in the world.

Across 18 states and into Canada, partners are restoring forests, reconnecting rivers, and protecting the lands and wildlife we all depend on. From removing barriers on iconic rivers to conserving tens of thousands of acres, this work is making a real difference for nature and communities alike.

This progress is only possible thanks to our incredible network of nonprofit, government, Indigenous, and community partners.

🔴 Red eft alert! 🔴

While out in the field at Cove Mountain Preserve, Preserve Manager Elizabeth came across this red eft—the juvenile, terrestrial stage of the eastern newt.

Red efts are known for their bright red‑orange color, which serves as a warning to predators that they’re toxic to eat. At this stage of life, they spend several years roaming moist woodlands before eventually returning to water as olive‑green, aquatic adults.

Fun facts about red efts:
• 🌲 They live on land during this stage, unusual for amphibians!
• 🧭 They can travel surprising distances through the forest
• 🌧️ They thrive in healthy, moist ecosystems like those found at TNC's Cove Mountain Preserve

Small, vivid, and easy to overlook red efts are a reminder that some of the most fascinating wildlife is found right under our feet.
