Good morning - Bobo update. PLEASE READ:
Bobo’s post was shared 28 times. This page has over 6,700 followers. To be candid, we are feeling deeply disheartened.
Over the past day, I have received several angry and, frankly, inappropriate messages criticizing our adoption requirements for Bobo - including messages that crossed into threatening territory. That is unacceptable.
Let me be very clear.
We determine adoption requirements based on what is best for each individual parrot. There is no universal standard. Every bird has different emotional, physical, and social needs, and our responsibility is to place them in the most stable, appropriate environment possible - one that gives him the best chance at a healthy, secure, lifelong home.
This rescue invests thousands upon thousands of dollars into each parrot in our care - veterinary treatment, nutrition, enrichment, rehabilitation, and daily hands-on care. These birds are treated as family, not inventory. Despite this, donations are minimal. Bobo has received less than $300 in donations over the many months he has been in our care.
It is also important to address the adoption fee.
The adoption fee for Bobo is intentionally fair, especially when compared to the true cost of acquiring, caring for, and properly maintaining a parrot over its lifetime - and in comparison to the significant financial investment already made in his care.
If an adoption fee presents a hardship, it raises a very real and necessary question: how would emergency veterinary care be handled if an unexpected situation arose? Parrots require specialized and often costly medical treatment, and being financially prepared is part of responsible ownership.
The individuals sending these messages are not the ones funding his care, managing his rehabilitation, or assuming the financial and emotional responsibility that comes with rescue work. We are.
Criticism from those who are not contributing - financially or otherwise - does not outweigh the professional judgment, experience, and commitment behind our decisions.
We will not lower our standards, justify our requirements, or place a bird in a situation that is not in his best interest simply to appease public opinion.
If you support ethical rescue, thoughtful placement, and doing what is right for the animal, thank you. Your support truly matters.
If not, this may not be the organization for you.
