Please join us as we come together to honor and remember the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

We invite all members of our community to gather for a solemn tribute, reflect on the lives lost, recognize the courage of first responders, and stand in unity with the families and communities forever affected.

Yesterday the Montgomery County Historical Commission was recognized by our County Commissioners Court as the recipient of the Texas Historical Commission’s coveted 2025 Distinguished Service Award (copy of Award certificate attached here.) The Texas Historical Commission (THC) gives this award annually to those county historical commissions (among the 254 Texas counties) that have significantly contributed to the mission of preserving and promoting the rich history of Texas and its respective counties.

The Montgomery County Historical Commission (MCHC) is presently composed of 37 members who are appointed to two-year terms by our Montgomery County Commissioners Court. These volunteers bring a variety of skills and interests to serve our mission. We partner with local nonprofit historical societies and museums across our county to elevate public interest and pride in the rich heritage of Montgomery County which this year is 189 years old. We are also grateful to County Judge Keough, Precinct Commissioners Walker, Riley, Wheeler and Gray, and their staffs for their enthusiastic support.

Before Lake Conroe was created in 1973, the Weisinger family owned 100s of acres in what today is April Sound. Below is an ad for the Weisinger General Store located in Ryals, Texas operated by John Weisinger in the early 1900s. The store was located just left of the April Sound security gate. This ad is courtesy of Gertie and Blake Spencer and is displayed in the Heritage Museum. Gertie Weisinger Spencer ably served as the chair of the Montgomery County Historical Commission for 26 years, and her brother John Earl owned the successful Weisinger Water Well Company now located on I-45 North.

In the 1900s, the Weisinger family members were highly respected citizens in Conroe. W. S. Weisinger served as Montgomery County Judge in the 1950s. Winfred B, Weisinger started Weisinger Chevrolet in 1939 (later Buckalew Chevrolet) at the corner of N. Frasier and West Phillips. His brother Louie opened Weisinger Pontiac shortly thereafter. His dealership building today is the Owen Theatre in downtown Conroe.
