Celebrating Local History in Conroe!

Conroe City Council are proud to recognize the presentation of Isaac Conroe, written by Andrew Rapoza at the request of the Montgomery County Historical Commission.

A heartfelt thank-you to Mr. Rapoza for his generous donation of books to each of the Montgomery County high schools! Your generosity helps preserve our local history and gives students the opportunity to learn more about the people and stories that shaped our community.

Last weekend Bernie was flown to El Paso to host a walking tour of El Paso, the genesis of the Mexican Revolution. As you can see in these photos, he wore a replica World War I army military uniform as he led the attendees through the streets of downtown El Paso. This was hosted and funded by the Tom Lea Foundation in El Paso whose members celebrate El Paso architecture and history. There is no one better than Bernie Sargent to narrate the city's history after living there 35 years and chairing the El Paso County Historical Commission.

Please see the attached flyer promoting the annual VOICES OF THE PAST cemetery tours on Saturday, October 17. The FREE event is sponsored by the Montgomery Historical Society. It is a wonderful educational opportunity for children and adults to learn more about the early settlers in Montgomery County.

PLEASE NOTE:
At 11am that morning at the New Cemetery in Montgomery, a memorial bench will be dedicated in honor of Pat Spackey who was a descendant of Charles B. Stewart and a passionate promoter of the Lone Star Flag in all respects.

Robin Montgomery and Larry Foerster were two of the speakers at the Saturday, September 12, Montgomery Community Center with the theme "RETURN TO VIRTUE." Robin was the keynote speaker, and Larry introduced the audience to Texas Alexander, the "Father of Texas Blues," buried in NW Montgomery County. T J Wilkerson served as the master of ceremonies and produced the beautiful event program.

We had five of our MCHC members participating in Sunday afternoon's Celebrate Freedom at the Willis Community Center. We manned 3 tables: Bernie Sargent at the Texas Flag Park table; Ron Saikowski who portrayed Thomas Jefferon at the America250 table; and Frank and Merlynn Hersom and Larry Foerster at the MCHC table.

Our MCHC meeting is tonight, Monday, August 31, at 6pm. The public is always invited to our Historical Commission meetings at the Conroe Chamber of Commerce at 505 West Davis.
