The Conowingo Lions Club was founded in the year 2000, and since then our members have made many contributions to our community and to other charitable causes. We have supported members of our community in times of need by purchasing food and gifts for needy families during the holidays and throughout the year. We have donated money for funerals to families that have experienced tragedies where th
ey have lost loved ones to fire and accidents. We have also donated money, clothing, and furniture to neighbors that have been affected flood and fire. The Conowingo Lions club does not only help others in times of tragedy. In fact, we are proactive within the community. We have organized and performed free eye screenings at Conowingo and Bainbridge Elementary Schools. We have paid for eye exams and glasses for many needy people in our community, and we co-sponsor the Fishing Rodeo in Darlington each year. This program provides free outdoor recreation to children and their families from our community. We continue to work with state and local officials to maintain the property at the intersection of Rt. 1 and Rt. 222. We provide a sign that welcomes people to our community and informs area residents of local events. We have established an annual citizenship award at the Conowingo Elementary School and Rising Sun Middle School. One boy and one girl from the fifth and eighth grades who demonstrate academic excellence and outstanding citizenship are honored with a monetary scholarship. We have also established scholarships for graduating seniors at both Rising Sun and Perryville High schools, since most of the students from our community attend one of these two schools. In an effort to further support the youth of Conowingo, we have teamed up with Conowingo Elementary and are now business partners in education. The Conowingo Lions Club holds the charter for and financially supports the Conowingo Cub Scouts. We also donate money for various Boy Scout projects. We are most proud of our work in establishing the West Cecil Health Center in conjunction with county, state, and federal officials in 2008. The success of this project has been astounding. We continue to support the efforts of WCHC as it moves to its new permanent location. Our Lions Club was instrumental in acquiring a lease agreement for property along Rt. 222 South in order to establish the Conowingo Park. Since then we have funded various projects for the development of ball fields, walking trails, benches, and signage at the park. Our newest project is the installation of the WeatherBug weather station at Conowingo Elementary. This weather station provides real time information not only to students and teachers, but to the community. Download the application on your smart phone, or check us out on the web! None of these efforts would be possible without the generous support of the members of our community. Every Wednesday we sponsor a fundraiser bingo at the Rising Sun Legion. 100% of the money we raise at these events goes towards funding community projects and programs.
