In a remarkable breakthrough, scientists Mary Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi have won the 2025 Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovering how our immune system maintains balance — knowing when to fight infections and when to stop.
Their work revealed a special group of cells called regulatory T cells (T-regs) — the body’s “peacekeepers.” These cells stop our immune system from mistakenly attacking healthy tissues.
The team also discovered the FOXP3 gene, which controls how these T-regs function. When this gene fails, the immune system turns against the body, causing autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and Type 1 diabetes.
This discovery opens the door to new treatments that can train the immune system to calm itself, offering new hope for millions who live with chronic immune disorders.
It’s incredible to realize — the key to healing so many diseases was hidden inside us all along. 💉🌿
