🐾 Rocky Update 8/6/26 🐾
We are excited to share that Rocky was released from Bedrock Tuesday evening and is now recovering with one of Hartman’s Haven Dog Rescue’s experienced volunteers, who will oversee his post-operative care.
His orthopedic surgery was successful, and the total cost of his procedure was $4,936.
Now the real work begins. Rocky’s recovery is expected to take approximately 10 weeks. During that time, he will be on several medications, strict crate rest, and exercise restriction, with only short leash walks for potty breaks. He will return for X-rays in 2–3 weeks to monitor healing and have a final recheck around 10 weeks.
Once he has recovered from surgery, the next steps will include getting him up to date on his vaccines, heartworm testing, and neutering so he can continue toward a healthy future.
We also wanted to share an important update regarding Rocky’s future. After many thoughtful conversations, Rocky’s owner made the incredibly difficult, selfless, and loving decision to permanently surrender him to Hartman’s Haven Dog Rescue. He is a very young man who works long hours and has very limited resources and support. He recognized that Rocky’s recovery and long-term medical needs would require more time, financial resources, and ongoing care than he could realistically provide.
While we were willing to continue helping Rocky while he remained with his owner, this was ultimately his decision because he wanted what he believed was best for Rocky. We have so much respect for him for putting Rocky’s needs first.
One request he had was that Rocky remain with his current foster and that he be able to continue visiting him during his recovery. We were happy to honor that request. He visited Rocky before surgery and has already been back to see him afterward. It is obvious how much he loves this sweet boy.
We are incredibly grateful for everyone who has donated, shared Rocky’s story, and prayed for him. Because of your generosity, Rocky received the specialized surgery he needed and now has the opportunity to make a full recovery.

🐾 Tuesday Rocky Update 🐾
We have some encouraging news this morning!
❤️ Rocky was successfully weaned off oxygen last night, and his breathing has remained stable.
❤️ The bleeding in his chest appears to have resolved, and his lungs continue to improve.
This means we are hopeful he is now stable enough to move forward with orthopedic surgery.
Rocky has a completely displaced fracture of his humerus (upper front leg). Unfortunately, this isn’t a fracture that can heal with a splint or cast. It will require specialized orthopedic surgery with plates and screws to repair the bone. We are currently scheduled to have this done on Monday. Until then he will be staying with a very experienced volunteer who can monitor his symptoms and for any signs of distress that would indicate he would need to return to the emergency vet.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who has donated, shared Rocky’s story, and kept him in your prayers. The support from this community has been nothing short of amazing, and because of you, Rocky has a chance to heal. ❤️🐾

Monday 7am update- 🐾 Rocky Update 🐾
Because of your incredible generosity, Rocky was able to get the emergency care he desperately needed last night. Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared his story, and kept him in your prayers.
Ashley picked Rocky up from his owner last night and took him to Denver Animal Emergency. His owner truly loves him but simply didn’t have the financial resources for the emergency care Rocky needed.
X-rays and bloodwork confirmed that Rocky has:
💔 A collapsed lung (pneumothorax)
💔 Fluid in his chest
💔 A severely broken front leg
His emergency hospitalization and treatment were estimated at $2,500 for last night. Right now, the priority is stabilizing his lungs and making sure the fluid doesn’t worsen. If he improves, the next step will be an orthopedic consultation for his leg, which will likely cost $5,000+.
We’ll post another update as soon as we know more. Thank you for giving Rocky a fighting chance. ❤️
Original post Sunday July 26-
Many of you have been following the story of the brindle boxer who was hit by a car on Springs Road Hickory NC yesterday. I wanted to give everyone an update.
His owner has been found and did exactly what most of us would do—he rushed him to the emergency veterinarian. Unfortunately, because of the high cost of emergency care, he was only able to afford an examination, pain medication, and fluids before having to bring him home. At this point, there is still no definitive diagnosis because he desperately needs X-rays and bloodwork.
Sadly, he is not wanting to eat, drink, or walk. Until we know exactly what injuries he has, it’s impossible to know whether they can be treated or if the kindest option would be humane euthanasia.
As many of you know, I volunteer with Hartman’s Haven Dog Rescue, and our rescue family has reached out to see how we can help. Even though we no longer take in animals and do adoptions we try hard to help with emergency situations like this. We’d like to give this sweet boy the chance to get the diagnostics he needs so his owner can make an informed decision based on medical facts rather than financial limitations.
If you would like to help, we will be placing his care under the rescue account so he can receive our veterinary discount. You can:
❤️ Send a donation to Hartman’s Haven Dog Rescue, and every dollar designated for this dog will go directly toward his veterinary expenses.
Once we have a diagnosis and an estimate, people can also call in donations to the vet if they are more comfortable that. The plan is to have him see Denver, Emergency Vet this afternoon and then potentially transfer him to Charlotte.
Our immediate goal is to raise enough to cover his X-rays and bloodwork. Once we know what we’re dealing with, we’ll update everyone on his condition and, if treatment is possible, discuss any additional fundraising needs.
Thank you to everyone who has shared his story, reached out with concern, and offered to help. Please continue to keep this sweet boy and his owner in your thoughts. They are both going through something no pet owner ever wants to face.
Thank you all for showing such kindness and compassion.
Sincerely
Ashley Mauney and Crystal Hopson
