Thank you so much to everyone who reached out ❤️ We are okay! Just a bit shaken up still. Shadow still won’t go out to the pasture, unless I go with him (Chance just follows Shadow and does whatever Shadow does). Tonight, we had another storm roll in and for the first few minutes - all horses panicked before settling down. So they are definitely still recovering, but physically all are safe. We had quite a few people ask to help purchase a new shelter, but we have decided to not replace this portable shelter. We lost one to heavy lake-effect snow 2 years ago and now one to a tornado. We have 2 shelters of that kind left and are considering more permanent options (suggestions welcomed!). But if you are wanting to help while we figure out additional shelter options (besides the barn), we always need help with hay, since that is one of our biggest expenses. 🙏

I think we were incredibly lucky that there wasn’t more damage to our property and that nobody was injured!

The second he learned that I notice his quiet “no”, he stopped being loud. The second he noticed he had a choice, he chose to participate.
If you truly want a horse to respect you - you better make sure you know the true meaning of respect and give it to the horse first. 🩵

Just like Phoenix did - Chance goes through phases where he looks slightly skinny and then phases where he looks great again. It’s his overall growth competing with his height, which is such a huge clue that he still had so much growing left to do that should have happened more gradually before he was rescued. But nonetheless, he is gorgeous and he knows it! ❤️

I slowly backed away and I guess we are not mowing that part of the pasture anytime soon 😅❤️❤️

I found an abandoned birds nest today while mowing. If you look closely at the inside, it’s carefully engineered with black horse hair 🥹 This literally made my day. Our sanctuary is slowly becoming what I have always dreamt of - a place where not just humans and horses find sanctuary, but wildlife as well. I’ve been working on planting wildflowers, berries, and fruit trees over the years and even started a food forest (google it - it’s amazing!) and every year, I see more and more wildlife thrive here. Swarms of honey bees come through in the spring, lots of different birds, frogs and toads (pretty awesome for fly control!), rabbits, badgers, foxes, deer, turkeys, opossums, black bears, raccoons, bats, snakes, chipmunks, fireflies, and so many other critters that I can’t all name ❤️
This brings me more peace than I can put into words.

Do you see that face? It’s the face of “This food is incredible” 😂 Chance absolutely loves his alfalfa mash. He still gets it (with added supplements) twice daily. When a young horse, that is still growing, comes to us skinny and previously neglected, they often get a growth spurt after they receive adequate nutrition for a while. Chance was approx. 14hh when he arrived here in March 2025 - he is now at approx. 15.1hh. He definitely said “watch me become a big boy, mom” ❤️

Hi, I’m Monti.
If you met me today — all 2½ years of my handsome mane, floaty lope, and “hey, wanna be friends?” energy — you’d never guess where I started.

I came here when I was about 8 weeks old, alongside Ruby and one other foal. We were orphans, weaned way too early, skinny, confused, and honestly… I was terrified. Out of the three of us, I was the shy one — the kid who stayed in the back, who wanted love but didn’t know what it was supposed to look like.

And then came the night everything changed.

Ruby was hurt, so our human slept out in the barn with us. I was lying nearby, pretending I wasn’t paying attention. She reached out and gently scratched my neck. I thought about bolting. I thought about panicking. But then… oh.
Oh wow.
That felt good.

So I stayed.
Let her touch me.
Let myself trust for the first time in my life.

I think that was the night I chose her — and she chose me right back.

Now look at me:
⭐ DNA-certified Quarter Horse
⭐ Moves like I was born on a cloud
⭐ Gorgeous mane and tail (I mean… have you seen it?)
⭐ Loves chasing anything that moves
⭐ A tiny bit opinionated (but charming about it)
⭐ Friend to literally everyone — no strangers, only future buddies

Ruby and I are still like siblings, always have been. We survived the same beginning, grew up together, and figured out this big, weird world side by side.

I may have started life as the timid one…
but now, thanks to a whole lot of patience and one perfectly-timed neck scratch, I’m the horse I was always meant to be.

And life?
Life is good.
❤️
