In December, the Raise the Roof coalition and allies helped win nearly $3 million for rental assistance and a full $5 million for community-based food assistance from Contra Costa County’s emergency Covid relief funds. The one-time funds for rental assistance will allow an estimated 675 additional households in Contra Costa residents to keep a roof over their head. The funds for food assistance will stock up local, community-based food banks and pantries to prevent hunger.

As working class communities struggle through difficult economic and political times, we applaud County Supervisors, non-profit service providers and community advocates for being on the right side of history by prioritizing the basic needs of our County’s vulnerable communities.

TOMORROW, November 18th, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors will make important decisions about how to spend $9.7 million left over from a COVID-19 relief package. Without more food assistance, families will be forced to spend more out of pocket to feed themselves, making it harder to pay rent. And without more rental assistance, the need to prioritize the rent to avoid homelessness will make it more likely that families go hungry.

📣 TAKE ACTION: As Trump continues to dismantle the social safety net, people are being forced to choose between putting dinner on the table and keeping a roof over their heads. For undocumented and mixed-status families, the challenges are even more grave, as the fear of raids has diminished economic activity, hurting businesses and workers.

In an in-person survey of 102 Latine renters in Concord, EBASE found that the federal attacks on immigrant communities has resulted in a loss of work hours and wages. This lost income has made it difficult to pay the rent and stay well-fed. These survey results reveal what many other immigrant communities in Contra Costa County are likely facing and show that people need food and rental assistance right now in order to stay housed and nourished.

Tell the County to allocate $5 million for community-based food assistance and $3 million for emergency rental assistance! Contra Costa residents, send an E-letter ASAP before the decisive November 18th Board of Supervisor meeting: www.bit.ly/bosletter
