Last Sunday (10/4), Open Democracy joined our partners at and our new friends at at Tufts University for Frontiers of Democracy 2026: “The United States at 250: Meeting the Moment for Democracy, in the U.S. and Around the World.” 🗳️

Together, we presented a panel titled “Democracy's Newest Voters: How Young People Become Civic Leaders,” exploring how we can empower the next generation of voters to get involved, take action, and become leaders in their communities!

It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow advocates and share ideas about strengthening youth civic engagement and building a more participatory democracy.

Students, are you ready to cast your ballot this November 3rd? 🎓🗳️

With a new court ruling on October 2nd, we know there's a lot to keep track of! Here's what the court clarified about student IDs:

✅ Registering to vote: Student IDs can be used as evidence of identity during the voter registration process.

✅ Checking in to vote: While student IDs are no longer automatically accepted to obtain a ballot, Supervisors of the Checklist may consider them, along with other available evidence, as reasonable proof that you are who you say you are.

Our recommendation? If you're able, bring a government-issued photo ID, like a driver's license, to check in and receive your ballot. But if you only have a student ID, don't let that keep you home on Election Day! Ask to speak with your Supervisors of the Checklist at the polls.

Have questions about registering, student IDs, or what to expect on Election Day? Drop them in the comments below! We're here to help clear up any confusion. ⬇️

Make your plan early, and VOTE! 📣

Ahead of the November 3 General Election, it’s important to know your options when registering to vote.

As of May 28, 2026, the Qualified Voter Affidavit (QVA) has been RESTORED as an option for voters who cannot provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote.

What does that mean for you? If you’re eligible to vote but don’t have access to documents proving your citizenship, you can still register by completing a QVA and swearing to your U.S. citizenship under penalty of perjury.

Know your options before the November 3 General Election—and help us spread the word by sharing this post! 📣
