Emily Russell with North Country Public Radio recently covered the Adirondack housing crisis and how the Northern Forest Center's Park Street project in Tupper Lake as part of the solution.

A large apartment complex is under construction at the site of a former factory. Plus, new apartments will soon be available in downtown Tupper Lake.

🚵 Ready to ride?

A new trail the Center helped fund through a grant from the Northern Border Regional Commission is almost done in Gorham, New Hampshire!

The Coös Cycling Club and Gorham Land Company are partnering to add approximately 1.5 miles of new trail that climbs from Gorham up toward the White Mountain National Forest.

Coos cycling club is a member of Bike Borderlands, a Center-led collaborative of 16 mountain bike trail networks that work together to provide great trail riding in Northern New England and southern Quebec, and to foster a shared sense of responsibility within the mountain biking community.

“Firewood banks” is often a new term for people. Think of it like a food pantry — connecting resources, in this case wood, to those in need. And, across the Northern Forest, firewood banks are turning a local resource into affordable heat, stronger communities, and greater energy security.

The Northern Forest Center has been a proponent of wood heat for more than a decade. Wood heat connects people to place, provides both alternative primary or secondary heat sources, reducing household dependence on fossil fuels, and offers individuals greater price certainty across the winter season.

Outdoor Recreation Manager Joe Fox recently visited Justin Oliver, owner of Silver Birch Cycles in Saranac Lake, New York, just two blocks from The Adirondack Rail Trail and close to numerous mountain biking zones. He’s a proud supporter of the campaign and wants to remind folks, “Wherever and however you like to ride, Ride With Gratitude and represent the sport well.”
