to a couple of weeks ago when the outgoing and incoming presidents of the Diablo Valley 8 Rotary clubs (DV8) gathered to share experiences, ideas, and lessons learned from our year of service.

The conversation covered the good, the bad, and yes, even the ugly parts of being a club president, offering valuable insights for those preparing to take the helm. Collaboration and shared learning are some of Rotary’s greatest strengths, and it was wonderful to connect across clubs.

A special thank you to outgoing Assistant Governor Trudy Triner and incoming Assistant Governor Dave Litty for hosting such a fun and engaging event at Back Forty Texas BBQ in Pleasant Hill.

Representing the Rotary Club of Concord-Diablo were outgoing President Colleen Knight and incoming President Edi Birsan. Both enjoyed the opportunity to learn from fellow Rotary leaders and help ensure a smooth transition for another great year of service.

Need Food Assistance? Help Is Available.

The Rotary Club of Concord-Diablo wants our community to know that no one should have to face hunger alone. If you or someone you know needs food support, these local resources can help:

• Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano provides food distribution sites, free groceries, and nutrition assistance programs throughout the county.

• Loaves and Fishes of Contra Costa offers free meals and food assistance for individuals and families in need.

• Monument Crisis Center provides food distribution and support services for families in Central Contra Costa County.

• Trinity Center Walnut Creek offers meals and services for people experiencing homelessness.

Need help finding food near you? Call 2-1-1 to connect with local resources, including food pantries, meal programs, and food distribution events.

Many programs are available with minimal paperwork, and assistance is offered to individuals, families, seniors, veterans, and others facing food insecurity.
Please share this post so that anyone in need can access these important community resources.

What an inspiring evening at the Rotary Club of Concord-Diablo!

Tonight, we celebrated President Colleen’s final evening meeting as she officially passed the gavel to our incoming president, Edi. Colleen’s leadership, dedication, and commitment to service have helped strengthen our club and our impact throughout the community. Thank you, Colleen, for an outstanding year, and congratulations, Edi, as you begin your presidential journey!

We were also pleased to celebrate Don Seta as he received his Blue Badge. In Rotary, earning a Blue Badge signifies that a new member has completed key milestones that deepen their understanding of Rotary and their engagement with the club. It reflects a commitment to service, fellowship, and active participation in Rotary’s mission. Congratulations, Don, on this important achievement!

We received a wonderful update on the internship program at Veterans Accession House, made possible through a Rotary grant. Our funding helped support an intern who is gaining valuable professional experience while contributing to the organization’s mission of helping veterans transition successfully to civilian life. It is rewarding to see the direct impact of Rotary investments in programs that create opportunity and support those who have served our country.

The evening concluded with a fascinating and thought-provoking presentation by Dr. Will Dunford on the history and significance of Juneteenth. We learned how Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved African Americans that they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. The holiday serves as both a celebration of freedom and a reminder of the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice in America.

An evening of gratitude, leadership, learning, and service. Everything Rotary is about.

🌈 Today, Rotary is on display in the community!
Members of the Rotary Club of Concord Diablo are participating in the City of Clayton’s 5th Annual Pride Parade, demonstrating how people from all walks of life and backgrounds come together through service and community engagement.

Before the parade begins, Rotary members gather for a group photo and a moment of celebration, highlighting the spirit of inclusion, friendship, and community that defines our club.

Featured in today’s parade:
✨ Edi Birsan, Rotary member and former Mayor of Concord, is riding in a fiery Corvette
✨ Laura Nakamura, Rotary member and current Mayor of Concord, is also riding in a Corvette
✨ Roya Brake, Rotary member, is representing the Mt. Diablo Education Foundation in the parade

We are proud to see our members showing up, representing their organizations and communities, and celebrating Pride alongside friends and neighbors throughout Clayton.

Happy Pride! 🌈

Today was a full and meaningful day for the Rotary Club of Concord-Diablo, filled with learning, fellowship, and service in action.

At our lunch meeting, we welcomed Angie Waybright, Community Liaison at Alameda Care Hospice, and Lauren Gernhardt, Director of Volunteer Services and Business Development at Alameda Care Hospice. They provided an insightful overview of hospice care and the mission of Alameda Care Hospice.

Alameda Care Hospice focuses on providing compassionate, patient-centered care for individuals facing serious or life-limiting illness. Their interdisciplinary approach supports not only patients but also their families, offering medical, emotional, and spiritual care tailored to each individual’s needs. Hospice care is centered on dignity and comfort, helping patients live as fully as possible while ensuring families are supported through guidance, respite, and bereavement services. Their work is a reminder of the importance of presence, compassion, and dignity at every stage of life.

Later in the day, member Kanwal Lachhar and her team member, Lupe, hosted our board members at the Cambridge Child Development Center for a warm and welcoming homemade tamale dinner during our board meeting.

It was a wonderful evening of connection and fellowship as we continued important club business together.

During the meeting, we were also proud to approve and present the next segment of our grant funding to The Veterans Accession House, reinforcing our ongoing commitment to supporting organizations that serve local veterans and strengthen our community.

Recently, one of our incredible club members opened their heart and home to a rescued mama cat and her kittens, giving them safety, warmth, and love after an uncertain beginning. While fostering these precious little lives, they are now hoping to help each of them find a forever family where they will be cherished.

It’s moments like these that remind us that service goes beyond meetings and projects — it’s about caring for all members of our community, including our furry friends who cannot speak for themselves. 🐾

If you or someone you know may be able to provide a loving home, please reach out. Together, we can turn this rescue story into a happy ending for these sweet kittens.

Tonight’s meeting at the Rotary Club of Concord-Diablo was a special one as we proudly inducted Ruben Olagues as our newest member! Welcome to the Rotary family, Ruben — we’re excited to have you join us in “Service Above Self.”

We also heard from Karen Douglas with Choice in Aging, who shared how their organization supports seniors and caregivers throughout Contra Costa County with programs that promote dignity, independence, and connection for older adults.

In addition, Melissa Allen from RotaCare Bay Area, Inc.’s Concord Clinic gave an inspiring presentation about the importance of providing free healthcare services to uninsured and underserved members of our community, ensuring compassionate care is accessible to those who need it most.

Thank you to both speakers for the meaningful work you do, and congratulations again to Ruben on becoming our newest Rotarian! 💙💛
