New Hampshire Fallen Firefighters Memorial On September 10, 2006 the New Hampshire Fallen Firefighters Memorial was dedicated after ten years in planning and seven months of construction.

The project was first discussed by the NH Corps of Fire Chaplains and was later picked up by the New Hampshire State Firemen’s Association. Thru the cooperation of state officials, business community, non-profits and thousands of hours of sweat equity the Memorial became a reality. Throughout the spring and early summer, site preparation and rough construction preceded the “Build Weekend” on August 25&26, 2006, where all of the pavers and flag poles were set, plants placed, and loam and bark mulch spread. The Build Weekend was attended by 160 firefighters and families from 38 New Hampshire fire service organizations. Annually the Memorial is host to the September 11 ceremony and the New Hampshire Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service. The events are open to the public and all are welcome. The New Hampshire Fallen Firefighters Memorial extends its deepest condolences to the fallen firefighter's family, friends, fellow firefighters, and the entire Durham community. We also send our thoughts and prayers to the two firefighters injured in the incident as they recover.

We honor the sacrifice of those who put their lives on the line to protect others.

DURHAM FIREFIGHTER KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY

(DURHAM COUNTY, N.C) — The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation received a request for assistance from the City of Durham Fire Department regarding an early-morning structure fire. Around 3:15 AM today, a 911 call reported a fire at 410 Marly Dr., Durham, NC. The first fire truck arrived at 3:21 AM, and smoke and flames were visibly coming from the structure. Firefighters began their work, and additional units were en route.

The structure is a multi-story commercial building that appears to have been used as a residence. Firefighters made entry into the building and began battling the blaze. At 3:31 AM, a portion of the building's roof collapsed, causing the second floor to collapse as well. Multiple firefighters were on the roof and inside on the first floor during the collapse. Several firefighters on the first floor were trapped. As a result, one of the firefighters was killed in the line of duty, and two others were injured. The two injured were taken to Duke Medical Center for treatment. All occupants evacuated the building before the fire department arrived and were not injured.

The SBI’s Arson Unit was requested to investigate the cause and origin of the fire and the circumstances of the fatality. The SBI has special agents on scene collecting evidence and investigating. The SBI will be the lead investigating agency for this event.

The following agencies responded and are working the event in some capacity:

-- City of Durham Fire Department
-- City of Durham Police Department
-- Durham County EMS
-- Durham County Sheriff's Office
-- Durham City/County Emergency Management
-- Durham County Fire Marshal’s Office
-- Raleigh Fire Department
-- ATF
-- North Carolina OSFM
-- SBI

This is an active and ongoing investigation, and additional information may be released by the SBI when available.

As we reflect on the 20th Anniversary of the New Hampshire Fallen Firefighters Memorial, these words from retired Hooksett Fire Department Captain Gary Lambert capture exactly what this Memorial represents.

Built by generations of New Hampshire’s fire service, it stands to honor those who came before and for those who will carry the tradition forward.

20 Years of Honor. Duty. Tradition.

This morning, firefighters, families, departments, public safety partners, and community members from across New Hampshire gathered in Concord for a very special and emotional milestone, the 20th Anniversary of the New Hampshire Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

For two decades, this Memorial has stood as a place of remembrance, honor, and respect for New Hampshire firefighters who lost their lives in service to their communities.

Today, we gathered once again to remember their names, reflect on their sacrifice, and stand beside the families who continue to carry their memories forward.

During the ceremony, four names were added to the Memorial:
Charles Gallant | Rye Fire Department | 2023
William Connor | Goffstown Fire Department | 2024
Aaron Cooper | Keene Fire Department | 2025
George Hidden | Nashua Fire Department | 1909

The morning was filled with traditions that have made this ceremony so meaningful, including the presentation of colors, wreath presentation, unveiling of the tablet, reading of the necrology and passing of the flowers, the Final Alarm, tolling of the bell, and the sound of Amazing Grace performed by the Professional Firefighters of New Hampshire Pipes and Drums.

To the families of our Fallen Firefighters, thank you for allowing us to remember alongside you. To every firefighter, Honor Guard member, piper, speaker, volunteer, organization, and community member who helped make today's ceremony possible, thank you.

Twenty years later, our promise remains the same: their names, their service, and their sacrifice will not be forgotten.
