Wow! Who knew?

“Asphalt is one of the most recycled materials in the country….”

Today, May 15, is Asphalt Day, a day to celebrate the people, projects, and innovation
that keep our roads moving.

Asphalt is one of the most recycled materials in the country and plays a critical role in
building safe, durable, and cost-effective pavements. The asphalt industry continues to
advance how we design, build, and maintain our transportation network.

The FHWA Mobile Asphalt Technology Center is proud to support the agencies,
contractors, researchers, and industry partners working every day to improve asphalt
pavement performance across the country. This year, the MATC is celebrating Asphalt
Day by supporting the state of Nevada during a two-week site visit focused on training,
testing, and technical support for the asphalt community.

Here’s to the engineers, technicians, inspectors, plant operators, paving crews, and
researchers who help make better roads possible. Learn more about the MATC
program at https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/pavement/asphalt/matc/.

According to the CDC, one in seven adults has a mobility disability. The Greenway will be a trail for EVERYONE -- people with a mobility disability, families with strollers, kids learning how to ride their bikes, etc., etc., etc. The Greenway will be a resource for EVERYONE, not just hikers and gravel riders.

During its May 11 meeting, City Council approved funding for the next phase of the Merrimack River Greenway Trail.

The Penacook Rail Trail is a 1.8-mile segment extending from the end of the Northern Rail Trail at the Boscawen town line to Sewalls Falls Road. This phase continues the City’s efforts, in partnership with the Friends of the Merrimack River Greenway Trail, to expand access to the Merrimack River and develop a continuous, multi-use corridor for residents and visitors.

The Friends of the Merrimack River Greenway Trail will be supporting this phase through community fundraising efforts and have pledged $105,000 toward the local match. Eighty percent of the costs are being federally funded through the TAP program. For more information on the project, visit www.concordnh.gov/MRGT. The Merrimack River Greenway Trail reached another major milestone this week.

Yesterday, the Concord City Council appropriated funding to advance the Penacook Rail Trail — the next major phase of the MRGT.

We’ve sent out a special project update with new information, an interactive map, and ways to follow and support the project as it moves forward.

We knew that!

Communities are increasingly discovering that trails — like the Merrimack River Greenway Trail — are not just recreational amenities; they are investments in tourism, connectivity, public health, and economic vitality.

Interesting read:

The rails-to-trails movement shows no sign of abating, and a recent scholarly study found housing and neighborhoods near the new trails benefit from their presence.

PENACOOK RAIL TRAIL HEADS TO THE CONCORD CITY COUNCIL

On Monday evening, the Concord City Council will hold a public hearing and consider appropriating funding to design and construct the first 1.8 miles of the Penacook Rail Trail — a paved multi-use trail between Penacook and Sewalls Falls Road.

If approved, funding would come from a federal transportation grant, City matching funds, and a $105,000 contribution from Friends of the MRGT.

For longtime supporters, the Council meeting represents another major step forward for the MRGT.
