Schramm founded the Junior Charity League of Concord in 1930. The early League members provided nourishing lunches of homemade soup, crackers and milk to hungry school children in Concord. In 1950, the League began sponsoring the American Red Cross courses in baby care for expectant mothers, establishing a speech therapy clinic and founding the Student Eye Health program. In 1967, Safety Town, a s
afety awareness day camp program for rising kindergarteners began. In 1973, a program called Goodtimers was started to entertain and lift the spirits of the local nursing home residents. Throughout the League’s history, volunteers have led tutoring sessions, sold war bonds, performed theatrical productions, provided prescription eyeglasses and raised funds to benefit the local communities’ children. Also in 1973, was the beginning of The Mariam C. It is the League’s primary service project for the last 43 years. The mission of The Clothing Room is to provide new clothing for economically underprivileged local school children. We are able to directly impact the quality of life for these at-risk students. It is our hope that these children will be warm and comfortable, fit in with their peers, have fewer obstacles to overcome and to feel successful while at school. Our goal is to provide services to at least 1200 children.
