A public ceremony on Sunday, October 20th, 1:30pm, will honor Concord’s 19th Century Female Anti-Slavery Society with the dedication of a flowering tree and raised brass plaque placed in the Cemetery. The Society was founded on October 18th, 1837.
Our guest speaker is Dr. Sandra Petrulionis, Distinguished Professor Emerita, Pennsylvania State University, and author of many publications, including “To Set This World Right - The Antislavery Movement in Thoreau’s Concord.” Her presentation will focus on the development and role of the Town’s Anti-Slavery Society. The Thoreau Society honored her with its Distinguished Service Medal in 2020. In addition, local speakers will present further insights, including the significance of the venue for the placement of the memorial.

Contributions received no later than Friday, October 4th, will ensure that your name is listed in the Event Program Booklet.

A SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY
The Friends of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery has initiated a Commemoration deservedly honoring
Concord’s 19th century Female Anti-Slavery Society. The Society was unique in its membership of Black and White women, including Susan Garrison and her
daughter Ellen. Several members of the Society are
interred in Sleepy Hollow. The Commemorative plaque
and flowering tree will be located in a highly significant place in the Cemetery.
A public Dedication Ceremony will be announced.Contact to support this effort can be made at
