Last week, two members of the NHHEAF team traveled to Dallas, Texas, for the 2023 National College Attainment Network conference, “Uniting in Equity.” Shelby Muizzo, assistant vice president of college planning and outreach, and Cameron Owen, a senior education and career counselor, engaged with college access professionals from around the country and learned some new strategies to make postsecondary education attainable for all students.

What’s more popular than the mini stuffed bears we’ve been giving away at events? Well, nothing, honestly. We pulled those babies out of storage to give away before our big rebrand (more on that coming soon!), and people can’t get enough. BUT we’re happy to report that our new resources and materials were also a hit at the NH School Counselors Association annual conference at St. Anselm College last week.

This year, school counselors are dealing with a major overhaul to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which coincides with a new state law requiring FAFSA completion as a graduation requirement. Karen Collins and Moira Valenti, two of our senior education and career counselors, presented a workshop outlining key changes to the FAFSA and unveiling our new FAFSA toolkit for educators. Meanwhile, education and career counselor Eric Lofstedt staffed a table at the conference,
answering questions and handing out our brand new Financial Aid Insiders! The event was a great opportunity to learn the questions counselors are fielding from students and families and remind them we’re here to help.

“We are proud to work in partnership with school counselors across the state,” said Shelby Miuzzo, assistant vice president of college planning and outreach at the NHHEAF Network. “While school counselors do the essential and irreplaceable work of supporting individual students’ growth and development, we come alongside to offer support as students plan for the future after high school.”

Last week, the NHHEAF Network and Keene State College held a special reception honoring winners of this year’s NHHEAF Network Scholarship. Five of the 10 Keene State College students who received scholarships last June gathered in the parlor of the President’s Residence to share their stories and chat with NHHEAF Network President and CEO Christiana Thornton and other members of the NHHEAF Network team, along with College President Melinda Treadwell, Provost James Beeby, and other members of the administration.

Christiana shared her own story of struggling to pay for college as well, telling the students that her passion for helping students pay for college comes from her own experience: “The need is so much greater than what we have to give, but we’re excited to do what we can,” she said.

The five students were among 96 recipients of scholarships totaling $300,000 this year. “To see such excellent students doing so well, it just warms our hearts,” Provost Beeby said.
