“I am drawn to bold colors combined with organic and whimsical shapes that feel alive, slightly off-balance, and in motion.”

Originally from Cologne, Germany, Petra Pingel is a multidisciplinary artist whose creative path began early, inspired by a family of makers that included a poet grandfather, a painter uncle, and an elementary school teacher who worked as an illustrator. After completing an apprenticeship in printing and typography, she earned a degree in graphic design from Kunstschule Alsterdamm in Hamburg and worked professionally as a graphic designer in Germany before moving to Charlotte in 1996.

In 2018, Petra discovered a passion for hand-glazed tile art, a medium that combines her design background with her love of color, texture, and experimentation. Through her work, she simplifies forms into bold, graphic shapes while incorporating organic lines, patterns, and movement. Because glazes shift, blend, and transform during the firing process, each finished piece contains an element of surprise that cannot be fully controlled.

Petra's work ranges from intimate single-tile pieces to larger multi-tile compositions. Each tile is hand-painted with ceramic glazes and kiln-fired to cone 05, creating a durable surface that is both heat- and weather-resistant. Her tiles can be displayed as decorative objects, installed as functional wall pieces or backsplashes, or framed and presented as artwork.

Two Emerging Artist grants from the Arts & Science Council Charlotte in 2022 and 2024 helped Petra purchase her own kiln and transform a room in her home into “The Tiny Tile Studio,” where she continues to develop new work.

Petra's work can be seen at art shows throughout the Charlotte area and by appointment at The Tiny Tile Studio in Charlotte. Her work is also currently on display at the Cabarrus Art Guild’s 2026 Spring Show at ClearWater Arts Center & Studios from May 3 through June 20, 2026.

We're spending some time with the small details in Through the Ether today.

Whether subtle or striking, April Simmons' attention to the smallest details makes us want to lean in.

Stop by before the exhibition closes on June 18 and see what catches your eye. Consider this your challenge: how many of the tiny details hidden throughout this video can you find? 😉

Please note: We’ll be closed until 1:30 PM from June 2–5 for summer camps. We look forward to welcoming you during our afternoon hours, 1:30–5:00 PM.

“Functionality is a huge component of my work. I want to create something that is unique and beautiful while being sturdy enough for everyday use.”

Cassie Utter is a leather artist whose creative journey has taken her through a wide range of mediums, including oil and acrylic painting, stained glass, and silk painting. In recent years, she has focused her attention on vegetable-tanned leather, a versatile material that can be dyed, painted, molded, carved, and tooled into highly detailed works of art. What began more than a decade ago as designing horse archery equipment has evolved into an ongoing exploration of carving styles, construction techniques, and functional design.

Inspired by the challenge of learning new techniques and refining her craft, Cassie is constantly pushing her work to new levels. She specializes in Western floral carving and figure carving, often incorporating painted details, bezel-set cabochons, and braided lace to create depth and dimension. Whether designing a bag, case, or other functional piece, she strives to balance beauty, durability, and craftsmanship.

A member of the Cabarrus Art Guild for more than three years, Cassie first became involved through Open Art Tuesdays at ClearWater Arts Center & Studios. She credits the Guild's welcoming and supportive community with helping her discover new mediums, develop her skills, and connect with fellow artists. In addition to serving as Membership Chair for the past two years and Holt Scholarship Chair for one year, she has earned recognition in the Guild's Spring Art Show, receiving First Place in 3D Art in 2025 and an Honorable Mention in 2026.

You can find more of her work by visiting her page at Fleet Pony Leather Art. Cassie's work is currently on display at the Cabarrus Art Guild’s 2026 Spring Show at ClearWater Arts Center & Studios from May 3 through June 20, 2026.

“Photography is a way for me to process life, healing, and growth.”

Amy Winnicki is a fine art photographer, poet, and author. Through her photography, she explores quiet moments in nature, capturing waterfalls, shifting skies, winding trails, and birds in motion. Describing her style as “moody nature storytelling,” Amy creates atmospheric images that reflect emotion, vulnerability, and the beauty found in stillness.

Inspired by resilience in both nature and people, Amy’s work often centers on themes of endurance, transformation, and hope. She is drawn to the way rivers navigate obstacles, trees recover after storms, and light breaks through heavy clouds. Her photographs invite viewers to slow down, reflect, and connect with the emotional landscapes woven into the natural world.

The Cabarrus Art Guild gave Amy her first opportunity to publicly exhibit her work, and she has since received multiple awards through the Guild, including recognition in the 2026 Spring Show. She shares that being part of the Guild’s supportive creative community has helped her grow as an artist while building meaningful connections with fellow creatives throughout the region.

Her work is currently on display at the Cabarrus Art Guild’s 2026 Spring Show at ClearWater Arts Center & Studios from May 3 through June 20, 2026.
